Hypnotherapy/Guided Imagery -- Possible Trigger???

Posted by TherapyGirl on March 1, 2006, at 13:55:55

Hi, All:

I'm new here, so not quite sure on when to mark things as a possible trigger or not. (Feel free to give me the guidelines for this.)

I have been seeing a certified hypnotherapist for almost a year now, in addition to my regular T. We have mostly concentrated on stress and pain management, but have dabbled in exercises specifically for PTSD with mixed results. My T and I have separately come to the conclusion that I just don't feel quite safe enough with the hypnotherapist to get the full benefit of the exercise. So now we are talking about me doing the exercises with a CD at my T's office.

Have any of you done any work like this? If so, what have you gotten out of it? Does the plan to do the exercise in my T's office sound like a reasonable plan to you? Are there any pitfalls that you see?

I've been lurking around this Board for months now and appreciate how supportive and helpful you are to each other. I hope to become a fully integrated member of this community in the coming weeks.

Hi and welcome!

My therapist doesn't want me near hypnotherapy. My dissociative tendencies are too great. But if I were ever to do it, I think I'd only want to do it with my therapist (who unfortunately isn't certified to do it). I would think trust would be key.

Does your therapist have enough familiarity or training to handle any problems that might come up?

Hi, Dinah. I have really enjoyed reading your posts the last couple of months and have learned a lot from you.

I have been with my T for 21 years (I know, it's embarrassing) and feel completely confident that she can handle whatever comes up. I don't think I'll be remembering anything new -- just trying to get in touch with the feelings from what I do remember. We've already done so much work around abuse issues and I thought I was done, but you know it has a way of cropping back up when I least expect it to.

I think you're right about the trust issue -- that's why I "hit a wall" with the hypnotherapist. I like her fine, I just haven't known her long enough to trust her that much.

I hope it's not embarassing. We have our eleventh anniversary in a month and a couple of days. :)

I'd always wanted forever therapy, and he joked with me about doddering in and being so old he wouldn't be able to remember anything and I'd be so old I wouldn't remember that he'd forgotten.

You're right -- it shouldn't be embarrassing. My T is the longest-term relationship I have. :-)

And I've joked about having my sessions in a nursing home...

Thanks, Dinah!
