"Some of the most helpful talks I've had occurred when I and my adviser of the moment were doing something else—fishing, tinkering, running the roads. If I were a psychologist, I think I might keep a big bushel of garden produce in my office and ask my clients to help me shuck, shell, or husk while we talked." –from Garret Keizer's "Help: the Original Human Dilemma" (2005) pg 132
A few years ago, someone on this board said if she were a therapist, she would take her clients for walks in the park during their sessions.

Hi Pseudoname,
Interesting idea. I wonder if it would help me talk more if I was doing something besides sitting there with my arms tightly crossed? Instead of my T saying, *no, don't cross* she could say here's some beans, get to work.

Ha! My T DOES take me for walks. Lotsa times. I took her down my favorite trail one time.
Its a good thing for me. makes her seem more real. I have reality problems sometimes.
One time I did a big dissiciation at a session and she took me for a walk after to chill me out.
However ....upon reading this............
I'm not a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!

My therapy really started opening up when I started using my therapist's crayons to draw while we talked. I just started doing it one day, and it really helped! When he moved, I made a point of finding an art therapist to work with next, because working on something while we talked was so helpful.

when i was a teen, my dad wanted me to go to a therapist/sports trainer. he ran with his clients while they did therapy. at the time i would have hated it i'm sure, but looking back it would have been so much better for me than the really bad therapy i had.

I have had a couple therapists take me for walks too. I have even... Had therapy over coffee in a coffee shop lol. The latter was terrfic actually. My t was getting all uptight about my not being able to look at her and I said it was the setting and we could do therapy over coffee and I wouldn't have a problem. We did and it was fine lol. In fact... It was better... Easier for me to remain relatively calm. People watching and all lol. Even though they were out of earshot..

I remember in sixth or seventh grade (about 12 years old) on art days, the whole class would be working quietly at our individual projects, but we would also be having a very easy, quiet conversation with the whole class. We even remarked about it at the time. I vividly remember one chum saying to the whole class, "Isn't it weird that we always talk like this on art days?"
This is the end of the thread.
