How do you tell......(((might trigger))))

How do you explain SI to a new therapist or p-doc? I cut my wrists/arms, not horribly, but badly enough that you can see obvious scars. I'm so self conscious of this, and think I would just die if asked. I have a feeling the p-doc will notice because I have to sign form for him after every appt. He hands them to me, I have to hand them back.

Anyway, this was 20 years ago, a one time thing on both arms, done in anger. Stupid, stupid, stupid! I'm seeing a plastic surgeon in Sept. to see if they can do anything. The last PS I went to was so horrfied that I never went back.

I am thinking that maybe they have seen lots of incidences like this. And maybe they have become immune by now.

They would also understand if you said, that you did those out of stupidity when you were young. And now you haven't done anything like that for a long time. That will help also.

They are pretty much immune to everything under the sun I guess.

hey jazzed.
true, most T's have seen it all. however, i've come across a few that almost became aggressive at how to "approach treatment for people who mutilate themselves". i personally prefer the term SI. i've also had a T that was great, though he was suprised when i told him, he was supportive and wanted to help me stop. There are some that if they find out they may stop treatment. The T i have now is not really 'familiar' with these issues, but somehow he's the best and has given me many other options to use (successfully).

Anyway, i guess the jest of this stuff is to make sure and be upfront as soon as possible, if this T can't 'handle' things you don't want to spend precious time before you find that out. Also, even though you did this years ago, maybe there are still some unresolved issues there that you may need to revisit??
best wishes.

I think that if you said just what you said here, you'd cover the essentials.

IF it comes up, "It was a stupid thing I did out of anger, 20 years ago."

If you say it in the right tone, it has its own closure.

Thanks pinkeye, B2, and Lar,

Maybe I'm worrrying over nothing, "excessive rumination?" LOL Anyway, I hope that it's not an issue, and I think that Lar, what you said is good advice, and if it get's like B2 said with someone who's aggressive, I'll quit them, don't need that! I did it once, and that was over 20 years ago, no issues left there, unless you count overeating as SI. I've always had the opinion that pinkeye had that they've seen it all w/everything else BUT this. Guess it's too personal/raw for me, too much shame attached to it.

Thanks,
Jazzed
