I am just noticing and observing, that all of us here who continue to babble are all women. How come nobody here is a male?
I am asking this question mainly becuase, if men are not into psychology and emotions so much, why do they become therapists in the first place?

We do get some guys over here. Damos comes here sometimes. And Broken. And Toph.
But yeah, mostly women over here. I've noticed that too.
> I am asking this question mainly becuase, if men are not into psychology and emotions so much, why do they become therapists in the first place?Well, isn't it obvious? TO PICK UP WOMEN!!! Ha ha, I am kidding of course ;-)
I wonder if it has something to do with the issues that we tend to gravitate towards on the pscychology board. We tend to get pretty intense with attachment and erotic transference stuff etc etc. I wonder if that tends to be less of a problem for guys? Or if guys tend to do better with something like CBT which is more problem focused rather than more reflective. I mean - a tendancy rather than a general rule.
I'm not sure. I'd be interested to hear from guys, though.

>if men are not into psychology and emotions so much, why do they become therapists in the first place?
because they like women lol
But serioulsy I feel like there are alot of guys on the boards, yes probably many more women but that is likely becasue we sort of fit our stereotype :-)

Yeah...
I know two guys who are studying to become therapists.
One is doing clinical psychology and the other is doing a Master of councelling.
Why are they doing it???
Well... Both of them have their own issues.
Depression. Social Anxiety. Sexual Abuse.
Both of them quite like the thought of having female clients (but are also concerned... Seems to be a rescue fantasy thing IMO).
But also: Because they want to understand their own issues and find some peace for themselves and because they want to help other guys who have the same issues as them (especially).

Ha ha, I am kidding of course ;-)If I may be so bold as to invoke stereotypes as an explanation, men tend to have high levels of pattern recognition abilities. Moreover, this cognitive recognition process is less encumbered by the concurrent emotional processing for which women's brains are known. Brain imaging shows that women have processing activity that is far more generalized, by region, and of higher net intensity, than the region-specific processing of men. E.g. spoken language "lights up" the emotional and language processing parts of women's brains, in equal measure. A male, however, shows high activity only in the language processing area. Both have similar occasional increases in frontal activity (planning, concept).
Not that this physical difference explains anything, but it might be a good clue. Mars/Venus.

Ya. Not an issue for me.
> I wonder if that tends to be less of a problem for guys?
Even if it does occur, I suspect it is a different kind of problem.
> Or if guys tend to do better with something like CBT which is more problem focused rather than more reflective.
See? Maybe that's it. I was thinking in terms of CBT, above.
> I mean - a tendancy rather than a general rule.
Tendencies are the basis of stereotypy. We wouldn't have stereotypes without recognizing trends. It's the invocation of absolute thinking in stereotypy that creates the problems: e.g. racism, sexism, etc. We just need to cancel the general rules. ;-)

In my own case, I seem to have an adverse effect on threads here. Often, my post is the last post in a thread.

I find that terribly hard to believe. Based on your contributions on other boards, anyway. In fact, you'd have to prove it to me from the archives or something.
But, you make a worthwhile point about male/female brains processing things in different ways. I think we actually run into some trouble in life when we either forget that, try to forcibly change it, or don't give it the weight it's due.
>> Often, my post is the last post in a thread.
Well, dear Lar, I fixed THAT little problem this time, now didn't I... ;-)
I still wish guys would post on this board more often.

What we need are code-breakers. I don't speak girl code. I am dyscodic. E.g. "I do not know why you're mad, and "should know" has no validity. If I didn't love you, I'd be making no effort at all, in trying to work this out with you."
Does that maybe ring a stereotype bell, or two?

I don't tend to come here often because I've never had therapy or counselling and more often than not tend to doubt the value of anything I'd be likely to contribute.
But I do come here because people I've grown to care an awful lot about post here and who knows just maybe sometimes simply letting them know you're here listening matters.
As to why men become therapists, well from some of the stuff I've seen here, serving the greater good sure as [insert appropriate term] don't seem to be it. I don't know, maybe it's that male need to fix things. May be it's a need to be worshipped, adored or admired I don't know. [Sorry, I'm in a place right now where to say I was overly negative about everything would be puting a positive spin on it]. What Lar said sounded pretty reasonable to me except the part about being a thread killer.

And, being the wicked little boy that I can sometimes be, I was going to leave the post for a while.....but I saw Damos posted last night, so I went to sleep knowing yoir last post disorder had gone into remission without even needing the treatment I might offer.
