Think they are dying

Posted by fires on March 21, 2005, at 23:30:36

Anyone know the terms for people who believe that they are dying and: 1) they really aren't

2)they really are and they seem to sense it, but no one believes them. (then they die).

Thanks

Hmm.

If you say things like 'I am dead' or 'my body is rotting' or something like that then you may have the Cotard delusion.

In fact this typically occurs in cases of severe depression and may begin with people talking about how they are dying before they actually come to the conclusion that they have died already.

:-)

Aside from that...
I have no idea.

Or docs don't believe patient -- and nothing shows up on tests -- until it's too late?

I guess that if nothing shows up on the tests then the doc wouldn't have any reason to believe that the patient is going to die...

... Except that the patient thinks they are going to die...

...But why does the patient think they are going to die???

Why???

If it is 'just a feeling' then it is hard to know whether it may be true or not...

Patient is extrapolating his current rapid decline into the future .. death being the conclusion.

I'm being serious, just in case you are wondering.

> I'm being serious, just in case you are wondering.

I figured you were being serious as the conversation progressed. Don't worry - I'm not poking fun.

Sometimes doctors miss things. That is true. And you do hear of cases where that has happened. Sometimes people even get diagnosed with somatoform disorders because the doctor can't find anything. Later - they the doctor realises they missed it, or a specialist picks it up. But other times it is a somatoform disorder.

So how do you know which it is?

That is a hard question...

I know that you aren't feeling very well, and I'm sorry about that. Whether the doctors can find anything or not it is still true either way that you aren't feeling very well.

> Patient is extrapolating his current rapid decline into the future .. death being the conclusion.

We will all die one day.
But whether that will come sooner than usual...
Well...
It is hard to know...

I guess that is true of all of us in a way.
I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.
We all live with that risk.

And I guess you just have to do the same...

All I can really say is that I think it may help if you could manage to muster some faith. Whether it is misplaced or not it can help get us through the time that we have. However long that turns out to be.

Maybe the doctors will find what is wrong
Or maybe they won't
Maybe you will die early
Or maybe you won't.

But you don't want to waste the life you have by worrying about your demise if you can possibly help it.

I hope you will feel better soon.
I have faith you will.
