What do people who need mental health support of soem kind do when they go away for extended periods of time? For work or school or whatever? Do you just take extra medication and hope you don't need to talk to anyone?

I guess it depends on what you mean by extended...I find traveling really hard right now and I use to love it. I think it is a safety thing for me.
Usually I make a plan with my therapist for phone contact. We match schedules and try to at least touch base and check in. When he went on vacation, he put things in place to help me get through it.
I would guess if you were going away to school for months and months you might need an "interim" therapist for support.

Some of Freud's patients traveled with the Freud family on vacation and stayed at the same resorts, so they wouldn't have to interrupt analysis.
I threatened to do that to my analyst.

...A very funny movie if you haven't seen it about a patient who shows up on his T's doorstep during vacation.

Im thinking about medications and things like that. I think I will have to probably get someone to interim when away. It would be alot of medication to have to take.
Thanks

Good one mair... I was plotting how to bring it up... even before I finished the post...
Wicked casting! (stuffy) Richard Dreyfus as the shrink and (wiggy) Bill Murray as "Bob". Wicked! What a study in pathos.... I missed the ground-hog and the gopher from his other movies, though! Maybe Richard Dreyfus is really a rodent......?!??
Naaaah! He's just hystrionic!Rod

I did mean this in a serious way....has anyone ever had experience relying on medical professionals outside their home? Or had problems with thier medications or mental health while being out of country?
Thank you

I'll get the ball rolling (hopefully). Poor Rain, stuck with me again :-)
I have never been in that situation, but I have heard of people making arrangements with their doctors to have prescriptions filled in sufficient amounts to carry them through the time they would be travelling. As for therapy, I would imagine that, depending on where the person is travelling, arrangements could be made and appointments could be booked to have therapy sessions over the phone.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Tamara! You are the best!
My pdoc does not think its necessary for me to need anything or anyone while away. Easy for pdoc to say...grrr. But I get worried about having a problem, being stranded and then what... and I assume others MUST have experienced this or something similar. I am being a worry wart! I know I know. I am thinking of the worst possible situation lol. But it is better to be prepared than not. Thanks a bunch, you made me smile :-)

You're not a worry wart! I would be feeling the same way, as would others, particularly if we are travelling to a country where we are unfamiliar with the health care system. I assume you will be getting Travellers' Insurance (or something like that)? If so, why don't you call Blue Cross or whatever and put your questions to them as well. Perhaps there are reciprocal agreements, through the insurance, to ensure travellers can get prescriptions filled (particularly in the case of an emergency). I don't know. Something to pursue perhaps.
Good luck to you.

You know, I hadn't even thought about all that. I guess it is something I really should do. I was just imediately thinking in panic mode :)
I am going to look into this further.
Thanks

Not to wag my finger in your face, but you really do need to look into travellers' insurance (boy, I'm a pain aren't I) if you are going to be travelling outside the country. It's not just about prescriptions, but if you were in an accident or had appendicitis or something like that, you could be faced with an enormous financial burden and/or second-rate health care. Don't take any chances. There we go - lecture over :-)
