Is that unusually short for a session?

Depends. It may be usual for some therapists. Especially if they see a person every hour and need 15 minutes to write up notes and go to the bathroom etc.
Have you seen them before?
Is it usual for them?

That is the length of mine. But I was actually wondering the same thing.

I think this can vary quite a bit, with the type of practice, number of patients scheduled, and also the therapist's personality and attitude toward time. I think the "50-minute" hour is kind of a standard (except for some pdocs who have gone to 2-3 patients an hour - mainly checking meds and *trying* to do a tiny bit of therapy). My former T. (pdoc) did do 45-50 mins., and had to stick rigidly to this being in a super-busy clinic with people on waiting lists to see him.
Current T. (psychologist)claims to do 50 minutes, but always runs over so I get an hour. No complaints here.
This is something I highy recommend you ask about up front with a new T. And if it's a T. you've been working with, now changing length of time, even more reason for a discussion. It can be a huge thing with boundaries and such. It has been and would be for me. There have been threads on it.

That's how long my sessions are. I think most are 50. Are we being cheated or what? But in the state I live, everyone I do know that goes to therapy, sessions are 45. Wonder why it's regional?

Mine have always been 50 minutes, except that my meds sessions with my pdoc are a half an hour, I think.
While there are days that 50 minutes seems like an eternity, I don't think I'd like shorter. I'm a slow starter and sometimes it doesn't seem like we get to the important stuff until there's only 10 or 15 minutes left.
And we do run over some, particularly if she doesn't have a patient coming in after me. She doesn't tend to bill me for the extra time unless we extend it to another half session. Maybe she doesn't bill me because it doesn't happen that often and I tend to be more vigilant about keeping to the time than she does.

I know someone who lives in NYC and she said that 45 minutes is the standard there. Where I live, it is more like 50.

Mine are 45 minutes. Very occasionally we'll run over 5 minutes or so if she doesn't feel I'm okay to leave or if we're really into a subject and trying to wrap things up. I wish I had 50 though. Somehow that 5 minutes seems like a big deal :)

Fifty minutes is the standard here. I hear some therapists try to squeeze in more clients by cutting down session time. I think that would be a bad reason.
Others cut down session time to have more time to prepare for sessions, write notes, return calls, etc. That's a decent enough reason, if it pays off in better sessions.
My therapist isn't busy enough where we have to do that. We have our fifty minutes, and often that doesn't even include the appointment scheduling.

Hmmm, I seem to be the exception here. I get an hour long hour.
This is the end of the thread.
