Enabling/codependent T?

Posted by fires on January 7, 2005, at 12:34:31

I read the following on the web: (sorry no source):

Here are four good definitions for codependency:

1)“An emotional, psychological, and behavioral condition that develops as a result of an individual’s prolonged exposure to, and practice of, a set of oppressive rules” (Robert Subby);

2)“A set of maladaptive, compulsive behaviors learned by family members to survive in a family experiencing great emotional pain” (The Johnson Institute);

3)“A stressful learned behavior associated with an unhealthy focus on the needs of others and/or attempting to take responsibility for the behavior of others” (Brian DesRoches);

4)"We begin tolerating abnormal, unhealthy, and inappropriate behaviors. Then we go one step further, we convince ourselves these behaviors are normal” (Melody Beattie).

I'm particularly curious if any Ts are "guilty" of number 4? My opinion: Yes! Beware!

Now entering my so. Calif. flood watch mode. Returning when rains subside.

I have no doubt that there are therapists who get into an unhealthy "helper" role with clients. But my experience with my current T has been great in that respect. She's modeled healthy caring for me-- she has an ability to remain open and empathetic, but without "fixing" or taking on my emotions. Someday I hope to be able to do the same with others. She has taught me everything I know about remaining connected without going into codependent relating patterns.

Hey,
We've got flooding too, although fortunately, I live on a hill and very near the river. Just have a very squishy backyard.

;)

Take care,
