Thanksgiving letter to my Therapist - input needed

Posted by Miss Honeychurch on November 11, 2004, at 15:13:26

I want to write a Thanksgiving letter to my T. I am afraid it is too maudlin or treacly. How would you react if you received such a letter? All thoughts appreciated!

Dr. P,

You mentioned once that you purposefully chose not to become an academic superstar, that the politics of academia were intolerable. You gave up the notoreity and accolades which publishing brings in order to establish your own practice. One thing for which I am most grateful this Thanksgiving is your decision to leave higher education for people like me.

Your help, guidance, and encouragement over the past year have changed my life. And while you may have received more personal gratification through formal recognition by your peers, please know that your presence is far more valuable than any keynote speech you could give or article you could publish.

So, in short, this Thanksgiving, I am thankful you are not a superstar. I am thankful you don't lecture to undergrads. I am thankful that somewhow you chose to call Richmond home. And lastly, I am thankful for your persistence, patience, and belief in me.

Hi Miss Honeychurch,

If I got this letter I would think that the profession decision I made was a good one. That I made a difference in one person's life that means more than any lectures to hundreds of students would have.

I don't think it's maudlin, I think it's the truth and in this case the truth is great to hear.

>>>I am thankful you are not a superstar.

<<<I love your letter! What a sweet thing. The only thing I might change is the line above...perhaps "I am thankful that instead of deciding to be a universal superstar, you elected to take your star power and light my personal pathway." I wouldn't want him to think you personally don't think he is a superstar. I can tell from your posts that he is very special, indeed.

What a wonderful thing to remember to be thankful for.

Miss Honeychurch,
I think it's a lovely letter -- personal, heartfelt without being mushy, and to the point.

I think any professional would be flattered & gratified to get such a letter. I think it's also thoughtful that you chose to send it at Thanksgiving.

Let us know what you decide!

daisy, great suggestion! Now I'll have to have several footnotes on this letter!

Thank you everyone! (nm)

It is a really beautiful letter, you should give it to him.
I think we all need to remember that we are appreciated by others in our lives.
