I want to write a Thanksgiving letter to my T. I am afraid it is too maudlin or treacly. How would you react if you received such a letter? All thoughts appreciated!
Dr. P,
You mentioned once that you purposefully chose not to become an academic superstar, that the politics of academia were intolerable. You gave up the notoreity and accolades which publishing brings in order to establish your own practice. One thing for which I am most grateful this Thanksgiving is your decision to leave higher education for people like me.
Your help, guidance, and encouragement over the past year have changed my life. And while you may have received more personal gratification through formal recognition by your peers, please know that your presence is far more valuable than any keynote speech you could give or article you could publish.
So, in short, this Thanksgiving, I am thankful you are not a superstar. I am thankful you don't lecture to undergrads. I am thankful that somewhow you chose to call Richmond home. And lastly, I am thankful for your persistence, patience, and belief in me.
