depression and job losses

Posted by Sammybabe on November 8, 2004, at 10:12:22

has anyone found it hard to keep a job with depression? my depression has really gotten in the way of three jobs in a row, from my sleepiness/lethargy to oversensitivity, it causes major problems and i've actually quit the past three jobs.
how do depressed people support themselves financially if the depression gets in the way of working? i've spoken to my therapist about this at length, but wanted to know if others out there have found that the depression impacts their work/ability to hold a job.

I'm currently on an 8-week leave of absence from my job - self imposed - because I can't control my angry outburst and tears at work. I hope I took the leave before they had decided to fire me. My depression has negatively impacted my last 5 jobs. I have to be able to put in a 40-hour work week and do it with some calm and confidence.

I find that my job(s) is/are the only thing that keep me wanting to get up in the morning, when I'm really depressed. I'm lucky though because I'm an extrovert and being in the public job I'm in now makes me happy, so even if I feel very stressed before I go to work and when I come home, I'm happy while I'm there.

My job has and still is suffering enormously due to my depression. I have been with my company for almost 8 years and the first time I suffered a total breakdown, I went through 6 months of on and off, mostly off, working. Eventually they told me job or depression and I chose job. So I *forced* myself to recover. Now I am sitting at work day after day, unable to concentrate, unable to get motivated, unable to want to be here, unable to like being here. My solace is the internet. The only reason I am still at work. And they still have the confidence to send me on a course in two weeks time? Actually, it's all new manangement and I hope my personnel file got lost with the old management.

Point being, however, that yes, my job has suffered and continues to because of being depressed.

Susan - I envy you.

Hi, I envy me too. I mean, enough already what I mean is this is the first job I've ever had well in thirty years anyway (last time being when I was seventeen) that I've been excited about. It's a silly salesclerk job, I mean, Associate, hah hah, politically correct terminology. Just like, in my last job I wasn't a chambermaid, oh no, I was a Room Attendant.
Society.
Yuch.

This is a good question. I don't know about others, but I bottomed out. When I did, I couldn't function at work or even at home. I would think about killing myself at work. The urges were everywhere, so I don't know. My depression has racked my mind and body. When I can't think, remember and cry a lot - that spells unemployed in my world. Also, it reads almost bankrupt. When you can't feed yourself and bathe as I, I don't see how could make it to a job.
