EMDR has anyone tried it?

Posted by john26 on October 9, 2003, at 3:17:06

my wife tried it and it seemed to help with specific things. we just moved and now we're not sure if we should continue. we've come across conflicting info about it. (ie. it's crap and doesn't work to it's a godsend that fixes everything) we just feel that it worked to this point and a test we took indicates no ptsd. we just have abusive mother patterns to work through and we wanted know other peoples experiences.

thanks, ben

actually, my son (12) is using it for a bee phobia. It seems to work well- like you said for very specific things. I have PTSD and didn't find it very effective.
take care, judy

A close friend of mine had this to help her PTSD flashbacks.. she says it was great. Very very hard on her during the period the sessions lasted, but in th elong term she says it has helped her immensly.

If your wife was getting help from it, it is definately worth considering continuing is my thouht.

hi..!
a friend of mine went through EMDR sessions (during 9 months more or less)..but together with therapy to process what happened during those sessions..she is an abuse survivor and she said it helped her greatly to reduce the intensity of her flashbacks..but it was quite hard ...She decided to go for it after having been in therapy for quite some time and not in a moment of deep crisis..because she said that it was really hard and challenging at times, especially in between sessions. But that in the long term it was really, really helpful for her.
If it has worked for your wife up to this point then maybe she should continue...?
Hope this helps a tiny bit.
hoping your wife finds what's good for her..
Adia.

Hi ben,
I did EMDR a few years back and it really, really helped concerning a rape I experienced at 7.
I'm sorry to hear that you have abusive mother patterns to work through, I understand.
The EMDR experience I had was remarkable, and very interesting looking back.
If you have any questions or would like to know anything about EMDR that I experienced, I am here for you, please don't hesitate to ask.
Take care:-)
Kristen

Hi I have done emdr with my therapist. It is very good, it sometimes brings up very very strong emotions that can be very unsettling. I think it's important that the therapist really know what they are doing. The timing of it is important too.

I've had a few sessions of EMDR (my therapist suggested it for dealing with depression and childhood family-type stuff, although most of the rough times in my life seem to have been teens and twenties). It has gone in some interesting directions, for example, discovering that my father behaved inappropriately towards me (though no abuse), and that I was bullied at school (I hadn't associated being picked on in front of people by prefects as bullying). However, nothing really substantial has come of it; perhaps I am expecting revelations when really there are none there, but it just seems a variation on the theme of my normal therapy to me. My 'safe place' doesn't really work for me as the EMDR doesn't (or hasn't yet) caused me enough pain to need to go there, yet when I am really down and cutting myself, my safe place doesn't work because it makes me realise how very far from reality and the here and now it is and that just makes it feel worse.

Does any of this make any sense? Maybe I haven't been exploring the right things with EMDR (alcoholic mother, sexual abuse from boyfriend, abortion, rape) and that's why nothing outstanding has happened, or maybe I have not been doing it long enough, or maybe I am expecting too much of it.

I've read up on it, too - positive and negative accounts - and yet, at the end of the day, I'm not sure whether it is beneficial or not. Has anyone else had similar experiences? How long have people been doing EMDR sessions before things happen and benefits are felt?

I did two or three sessions of it and felt absolutely nothing. :( It was relaxing, I guess. But that's about it.

I did EMDR for a year and some months. I have a life full of trauma...From my very first breath till I was in my 30's. You name it, it happened to me.
When I started I had no idea that so much of my attention and energy was going toward being vigilant...night and day. I had a kind of physical hummmmm....nervous energy that had a sexual stimulation to it. It was exhausting for me and others. Someone said I was like a rush on espresso.
I was embarassed about that but....
I spent a lot of time in EMDR and that has changed me to my very vibration...I am calmer and more centered. I like my life now. I like myself too.
It's a very powerful treatment for the right problem. Incident related problems are perfect for this therapy. I have been in therapy since I was a little girl. My feet didn't even reach the floor in the big chair.
Too much therapy that wasn't even effective. So if you are like me....well there's hope.

Thanks, and thanks Dinah for your replies. Perhaps I haven't given the treatment chance yet. I've had therapy for a number of years on and off with different therapists (I keep moving country because of my job), and this is the first time it really seems to be hitting home and producing something. So, fingers crossed.

I think this forum is somewhat humbling; to meet people who have had really bad things happen and are willing to share and support. So, thanks for that, and good luck.
