Hi Lookdownfish,
I'm being brave and posting at work!
I told her on my first day that I had a standing appointment on Thursdays and could I please leave at 4 instead of 5. I promised to stay late another night or work through lunch.
She agreed, but isn't happy. Evidentally she's had trouble with people saying they'll make up missed time. Yesterday, she asked me if my standing appointment was short term. I just said I hope so and she left it at that (for now?)

Don't worry about what other people have done. She'll get over it when you prove yourself.
Make a point of being visible either during lunch or when you stay late. Drop it into a sentence, "when I was here late the other evening, I ran into..." Or, if she is there late with you, go by her office and say, "I just want you to know how much I like this job. I'm learning tons and I really like (insert here)" This gives you the opportunity to again show her you are here and she gets some relaxed feedback from you. I know when people want to find me for stuff they often hang around because I'm known to work late. I appreciate the one-on-one time I can spend with them.
Just my thoughts.

Also, from time to time send her an email about a project or whatever when you are working late, so that the date and time are right there in the email.
(You don't have to write anything obvious like, "As I was here working late, I realized I wanted to clarify a point, which came to me as I was here WORKING LATE" etc. Just send a quick email from time to time after hours.)

Sounds like she needs a bit of convincing, but hopefully given time, you will prove that you're doing your fair share.

Thanks Daisy. Today she said goodbye to me on her way out, so she knows I stayed late.
You're right, she'll realize that I'm not like the others she had/has working for her. I'm just so impatient. Sigh.

Hi Joslynn,
I like the email idea- it's time stamped, so she'll know I am there late.
Thanks.
