Whatever happened to NLP?

Posted by socialdeviantjeff on February 2, 2004, at 3:42:14

Hi, first post here I think.

I was leafing through old CDs and found a bunch of Tony Robbins stuff. His stuff is way ro ra-ra for me, but the concept of neuro-ligiustic programming, or NLP sounds interesting.

I've heard very little about it and was wondering if it works or if it's a qwack science. Also is there material out there from somebody a little less manic than Robbins? (that is if NLP is worth looking at) I don't wanna walk through coals, but getting through the day would be nice.

TIA,

SDJ

I bought Tony's 30 day program (used - cheap on ebay) but I can't say it really helped me much long term, although I did enjoy listening to it.
Here's what I'm trying now, a computer based CBT program from www.maiw.com and will comment on my results in the future.

Good luck!

I saw that thread a few months ago and was going to ask how it was turning out. I'll be very interested to hear your experience with it -- before I buy it myself!

I wondered if maiw.com was even selling the program anymore. The one guy died a few years ago and they hadn't updated their web site since before that.

I got the software for "free" with the purchase of the book "Good Mood" by Julian Simon.
You have to order the software after buying the book.
The book is quite good also IMHO.

There is nothing magic about the software, it basically leads you thru CBT. For me the analogy might be exercise. When I go out walking, I tend to slow down as I get tired. If I use my treadmill, it forces me to keep a pace and work harder.

SDJ,

Bandler and Grinder are still out there someplace. I continue to see references to them(each).

The "Barnes & Noble" or "Borders" free libraries are places I've seen new NLP literature showing up. I am inspired by their "visualization" exercizes. I see delight in client expressions when they discover their ability to visualize a solution to problem, and that its OK to do it. This enstills courage to go out there and actually make a difference in their lives.

PS:Libraries? ...when you're done with your coffee and scone, you leave the book(s) and get up and walk out, with the knowledge presented.

Hi there. My old p-doc mentioned NLP to me once so I had a scout around. It seems to come up a bit with respect to motivation - especially with respect to sports. It seemed to be on a par with most self-help stuff to me.

If you are wondering about the NLP stuff with respect to where you look determines what kind of cognitive task you are doing (visual / verbal / lying etc)or what kind of cognitive task you are doing determines where you will look - the scientific jury will pretty much tell you that is BS though may be a matter of self-fulfilling prophecy...

Their claims to neuro-science supporting them turned out to be wishful thinking...(maybe they were looking in the wrong place at the time...)

My 2cents worth...
