No therapy for me!

Posted by SilmarilOne on July 29, 2003, at 21:44:39

I just thought I'd post here and whine. I live just north of San Diego, a very large metropolitan kind of area, and I can't find a therapist or group therapy that takes my insurance (medicare/medi-cal) I've been looking for a year. I've called dozens of em, they either don't take it, or have stopped taking it. Medicare's website has a list of a few, but they are either no longer practicing, or no longer taking medicare. ::sigh:: End of whine.

Sorry to hear that. Therapy business must be pretty good that they can turn down insurance.

There must be a way to get ultra-cheap therapy. You know, they all have to put in like 2000 hours of clinical work to get licensed, and it's typically minimum wage for them-- so I wonder if there are any groups run by therapists-in-training?

Group therapy can be pretty cheap anyway-- can you afford anything out of pocket? I think I've seen ads for groups that are $20 per session. Check the classifieds in the alternative weekly.

And there's the cheapest of all -- the free non-facilitated groups like 12 steps. It's not exactly therapy, but you can vent and get support. Those also advertise in the paper.

I also live in so. cal and I agree- there are no places that take medicare. However, you are eligible for an HMO like Blue Cross or Pacificare that work in coordination with medicare, and have a lot of options for mental health care with just a $15 copay. Go to the medicare web site to see what plans are available in your area. best of luck- judy
