Experience with going back to therapy?please share

Posted by Krissy P on March 14, 2003, at 0:35:39

Hi, I just wanted to ask if anyone has been in therapy then stopped it and went back? How did it go? How did you get the courage to go back? or did you want to? I have been in and out of therapy since 1995, and it has helped. In March 2002, I stopped therapy because I moved out of state and was really doing well. I was suceeding at school, and adapting well to my new environment. After being out of my mom's house since I was 18, at 32, here I am back home again. My finances will not allow me to rent anything where I live. I have had a rough time of this, but I find when I go out with freinds, to a movie, or just out-I am a totally different person. I feel trapped at my mom's whim. It's kinda sad because she doesn't have anyone in her life outside of work, besides her kids (2) me and my sibling. For some reason, I have a lot of fear when I begin to feel like me again-outside my mom's jurisdiction. After all,I am 32. I know she cares, but she can be extremely overbearing, and very controlling. So, I was thinking about entering therapy (one on one) to help. Would anyone suggest male or female or does it matter in this situation???
Any experience/ realted people out there with a comment or 2 or 3???? :-)
Thanks so much in advance,
Kristen

Sorry to see that no one responded to your post here. I just glanced over at this board, as I usually just post on "Social". OK. I have started and stopped treatment/counseling several times since 1989. I initially started going for depression while my mom was dying of cancer. Got the old tricyclic antidepressants, which had bad side effects. After a year, I decided I did not need it,and just stopped going, cold turkey.
In 1991, shortly after my mom died, I went back to a different Pdoc. That's when Prozac was just starting to become popular. That helped for a bit, but I moved the following year. I found a GP who prescibed me the Prozac in my new state, but I did not see a Pdoc or get counseling. In 1996, I began going back to a Pdoc because of Prozac poop-out, and sleep issues. After a few months trial, got on Wellbutrin and Tranzene, and have been going back just for meds every 4 months. Now, July-Dec 2001. I went to a counselor really to find ways to deal with my WIFE'S depression. That helped ME not fall deeper into my own depression. Started seeing him again this past Dec. for the same reason. So, YES, it is not unusual to stop, start, stop as you NEED it. Your life situation is certain to change over time, so your needs for attention will too. Hope that makes sense.

Hi paxvox, Thank you so much!!! That is what I needed to hear!!!! I was thinking that we can go back to therapy only when we really NEED it.
You sound like you are doing wonderful.
I almost forgot about this post-it reallly should have been directed to PB that's why I probably got no responses. Oh well.
Thanks again, all the best,
Kristen

The really important thing is that it helped before, and sounds like you are in a difficult situation now?

I know I'm being reluctant to go back to therapy myself at the moment, but I would go if I was under that much pressure. I have seen 3 different therapists (one emigrated, so that wasnt really my decision!) It can be hard work in therapy, but I really dont think its something that has to be once-only. There's no failure involved in wanting a top up,either.

I dont know if sex of therapist matters, tho someone else might have wise words on that one. I suspect there are *more* female ones, so it might be easier to find!

Lots of luck with staying your own person, whatever you decide. I do appreciate how hard that can be when you're back home. Its easy to say that its important to be independant and leave your mother to cope more on her own- but not so easy in practice!
