Hey, Phil--thanks. And it is good to see someone taking care of their own needs :)

Do you find CBT helpful, Phil? I can't even recall if you're currently in therapy. I of course blame the meds. If so, is it CBT?

I like the techniques of CBT, in small doses. The straight stuff makes me feel like I should bark and flap my flippers for a fish. I morph into a contrary and rebellious teen.

I've been reading this book over vacation, and it's been enlightening for me...

Hoo-boy, that really cracked me up. Thanks for the laugh.

Here is the link to the same book, but this way, if someone buys it, psychobabble gets credit:

"How Psychotherapy Really Works"
by Willard Gaylin MD

Only problem--when I made the link, it linked to a hardcover edition instead of the paperback. And, the title of the book is slightly different--it links to "Talk is not enough. How Therapy Works", same author. How would I link it specifically to the book that Eddie recommended?

That's the same book. I've just read it myself.

Dinah, Don't care for it. I was in group last year and ended up leaving without saying goodbye. I don't want to learn communication skills with people I don't like.
I may have stayed but my depression was getting worse, I didn't care for the people, and $40.00 a week adds up fast.
I've had quite a bit of individual counseling but if I have to tell my story to another therapist I'll really go nuts.
I know what I need to do in life-I just don't want to.

Phil

I know what you mean. That's at least 70% true for me too. But if doing what you're supposed to do made you feel how it's supposed to make you feel, don't you think we'd be motivated to do it? I think it's only partly true and the rest is a myth. You can probably do things to make yourself feel worse, but I'm not sure you can do things to make yourself feel better.
