No. Can you just imagine W. giving out food to the homeless? He would spend the time before Thanksgiving giving out lucrative contracts to the those who contributed to his campaigns.

My husband said a man at his work said he thought Obama would be the People's President. I think he showed that today.

Kevin Rudd did the same thing here, handing out food from St Vincent de Paul or somesuch organisation.
When KR was quite young his father died and the family was evicted from the share-farm and had nowhere to go, sleeping in the car.
Not something you are likely to forget.I imagine no one stomped up 30M for Obama to go into business.
Plus he knows about the world......he MUST know more.

Mr. Obama impresses me with his calm and cool manner. I feel reassured that someone is THINKING about my welfare and will do what he can do to help us out. (And I know that he reads) :-)

I picked up a very old book, on the curb, and inside was the 1944 platform for the Republican National Convention. (Living in this small town is wonderful as the curbs offer treasures beyond anything I've seen thrown out before.)
My parents were Republicans (me too, til poppy Bush) and I can see why after reading the paper. It states exactly what we need now. Fiscally responsible, education, appropriate social services and on...I was thrilled to find something so old and that would be very beneficial to us now.
If I run across it, (I put it in a "good" spot) I'll scan it and mail it. I think you would be very interested in the real Republican party.

There's been nothing conservative about the current administration.
You, like me I imagine, have seen conservatism morph into something quite unrecognisable. My idea of conservatism is that it is a reaction to utopian leftist social engineering, is sceptical about the powers of government to beneficially change things, and looks to the values of the past as a useful guide to the future.
In this sense Obama spending some time helping to feed the homeless is classic conservatism. Those values go back as far as you want to look, before Jesus, no doubt.
The idea that conservatism means nationalism, the interests of big business, or a literalist interpretation of the Bible, leaves me incredulous.
Funny how utopianism migrated to the right at the same time as conservatism migrated to the left.
But I suspect this is changing as we speak, to something new.

I suspect that during Christmas preparations, I'll find that old book and will be able to email you the document. I swear, it will give you shivers. To read that and realize that the Republican party was so different than it is today..I was born the year before that convention.
The first year that this administration served, Cheney paid $43M in taxes.And I cannot wrap my mind around how much money has gone into big businesses since then. After all we have a war to run and guns have to be manufacturered and coffins built.
All of this reminds me, Sigismund, of working for a "religious mission" when I was a teen. It was called "Christ's 40 Acres" and was about 9 miles from our ranch. I drove down on weekdays and typed endless letters to send out to contributors. The letter started like this, "Tis a beautiful day in the Kiamichis, this day of the Lord" and on and on...THEN it got down to business..."show me the money". The minister talked of barefoot Choctaw Indians with no food or lights. (so not true) He spoke of mysterious rural diseases that I had never realized that I was inflicted with. And then he asked again for their money. I had the letter memorized.
People sent their SS checks..they sent egg money. They sent clothing that he sold to the "barefoot Choctaws" and so much more.
The people that he wrote to thought he lived among the poor whites and the Choctaws and ministered to us night and day. The truth was that he lived on a big estate in Florida. His daughter and her husband ran the "mission" in Oklahoma.And there has to be sexual misbehaviors, right? The SIL minister tried to grope me one day but changed his mind when he saw my face.This was happening while he railed from the pulpit about the teens attending rodeo dances on Saturday nights. What a hypocrite. His son owns (through the money from the "associates") a big ranch and still lives there.
When I turnred 16 (worked there 3 summers) and went away to college, I told my parents that I would not be working there the next summer as I was sick of the lies and manipulations. I will always believe that my daddy felt the same way because he didn't protest at all when I refused to work for them again. My religious sister worked there for about 30 years. ugh.....
There you have it...take from the poor and give to the rich.
