turnout

My off-the-cuff guess is 60%. It hasn't been that high in 40 years, but I think there are a lot of very motivated voters this time.

It must make prediction more difficult.

As you would know it's compulsory here.

I worry that the opinion of the rest of the world may encourage US people to vote for McCain.

I'd be guessing that a worldwide vote would give Obama 90% minimum.

You wouldn't be far off, according to a web site run by The Economist: http://www.economist.com/vote2008/

There are pink, blue and red areas.

Red for Republican, Blue for Democrat.

Pink for undecided?

Pink was a long island that looks like Cuba (why?), Congo (ditto) and what might be Kosovo (understood).

Iraq for mcCain (s'pose).

The outlying states from the former Soviet empire might back McCain too.

Pink is for "leaning to McCain," just as light blue is "leaning to Obama" and grey is a dead heat.

If you mouse over a country it tells you what country it is and the percentage of votes for each candidate.

Cuba is a bit of a mystery to me, too. Actually, the pink one in the Balkans is Macedonia, and Iraq is solid red.

Bear in mind that this is not at all scientific; votes are cast by registered readers of the online edition of the Economist. So for instance, I'd guess that the votes from Iraq are largely from US contractors and military personnel who happen to be voting from Iraq.

Interestingly enough, they show about 85% of the Afghanistan votes for Obama. I think this probably reflects the way Bush largely abandoned the country and left it in chaos, whereas in Iraq there's oil to be pumped and money to be had.

An article in an Ohio paper today gave 80 percent as the projection for the state, especially in my home county. Not sure what the rest of the country is expecting. Going to be a busy and exciting day, especially if the weather is okay.
