glucosamine and chondroitin

Posted by obsidian on May 24, 2009, at 11:14:05

so, since I'm running a lot, I've become concerned about protecting my joints, specifically my knees.
Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions about glucosamine and chondroitin as capable of helping to protect one's joints?
thanks,
sid

Oh how I envy you and the running used to run a lot best you can do is wear extra pair of socks and add cushions to really good running shoes to prevent extra stress on the joints. Was told glucosamine is good but chondrontin molecule too large to enter. Not sure if this is true or not. I wish I could still run nothing like that runner's high. I absolutely loved it enjoy!!!! Almost 10 years ago I ended up in hospital with septic arthritis.

The fluid on my knee became infected and half a cup of pus was removed before (thankfully) it exploded into the joint.

Since then I've had an arthroscopy to remove some non-functioning split-off cartilage.

I have managed to remain asymptomatic since then by the use of the recommended (non-mainstream) supplements, which of course include glucosamine and fish oil, as well as other anti-inflammatory compounds from plants.

fish oil huh? You know I bought a bottle of it thinking it might help me stay sane, and I haven't taken it, was worried it was messing with my gut.

that stuff you described sounds awful sig, glad it didn't come back!

my brother runs marathons, in fact I heard that recently he was running a 10K race called "the mountain goat", an uphill race. He is persistent, and I suppose in a lot of ways so am I.
well, he's had to have knee surgeries to scrap stuff out, cartilage I presume?
makes me squirm, but still he runs
you know it just occurred to me that I should call him and ask
I had a dream the other night that he decided to pursue an art degree in california for a year, so he was leaving his family...very troubling, and extremely unlikely

thanks Phillipa, I think I'll pick up some glucosamine. I get the runner's high toward the end, it's hard in the beginning.

>was worried it was messing with my gut.

I can only take 1 capsule of that a day, along with all the other things.
There are people who can take 3 caps in the morning, but that wouldn't work well with me.
