Had to leave hospital AMA before finding out dx:(

Posted by kerria on November 4, 2007, at 21:07:15

Last night i became suddenly so sick- vomiting was so bad, constant that i couldn't even stand up, even breathing was so hard bc there wasn't time inbetween and it lasted about four hours. i had to go to er by ambulance and was too sick to get anything- my meds that i take for pain, teddy bear (important for me) even shoes and purse was left home.

At the hospital blood tests revealed an increase in pancreas enzymes and i was admitted. They gave meds for nausea and iv and things improved through the night. i was given some med for pain but not what i usually take for the chronic severe pelvic pain. Pain was so bad in the morning and no one would help me. When it became intolerable i signed out.

No one would tell me what was wrong- no one talked to me at all:( about what was wrong with me or about my pain. i had a CAT scan of abdomin after drinking contrast in the middle of the night but no word if it showed anything or not.

Has anyone ever had anything like this- Sudden severe vomiting, pancreas enzymes high- i don't drink at all and have low fat diet mostly. i'll call my dr in the morning but what do you think caused me to be so sick?
thanks for ideas or support,
kerria

Was your doctor able to discover your test results? They're still there even if you did leave.

My father had pancreatitis once, but I don't recall the specifics. At any rate, it doesn't sound like something you should fool around with.

Sounds like pancreatis to me also and you don't fool around with it. Sometimes TPN is administered into a vein in the neck area to feed you. Nothing by mouth til the imflammation is gone. Phillipa

Hi Dinah and Phillipa,

My Dr repeated the blood tests that were abnormal in the hospital - elevated pancreatic enzymes and low blood calcium and potassium, elevated white count and they had returned back to normal. She conccluded that i had some kind of poisoning- which is so weird because i don't eat out and had eaten very safe simple things that day and the days before. Somehow i ate something very bad. It's a mystery why i became so sick. It's nerve-wracking too because i don't know if there's something still in my house that can make us sick again.

i'm so thankful that i'm better. i was never so sick before- it was terrible.
At least it was temporary. If i didn't get help i don't think that i would have made it.
i wish that someone had thought of giving me a screening test for toxins, so i could have discovered what specifically made me so sick so i could try to prevent it from happening again.

You're better now but starting new meds too? Could this be why you are having the mini-seizures? Please don't be scared just ask your doc. Phillipa
