Can someone recommend an exercise tool that is quiet (will not disturb neighbours) and gives a good workout.

What type of workout are you looking to do?

I am not particularly interested in muscle building, I just want to burn some fat.
I'm thinking about an elliptical trainer or an exercise bicycle, something that will give me a good workout infront of the TV.

I dont generally post on this board, but...
I really like the ellipticals. I feel like it's a better workout than a stationary bike, at least for me, and there is no impact. It's very easy to get into a solid rhythm, and the difficulty of the workout changes drastically with how fast you go... more so that increasing or decreasing speed on a bike, in my opinion.
I think they also make them that allow you to work your arms at the same time. I've never used one of these - I'm afraid it'd be a balance problem for me - but it looks like it'd be a great workout.
My favorite type of exercise has to be step aerobics though. I'm a dancer and step is just dance-y enough to keep me entertained. Group fitness definitely isnt for everyone though.

If you already have a regular bike you can buy a stand for it so it is a stationary bike.

I've done quite a bit of research on this one and treadmills and elliptical machines are usually rated the best. Personally, I own an elliptical machine and really like it. My only advice would be to get a fairly decent one if you can afford it.Another great workout tool is to buy an exercise ball. They are very good for toning your midsection and much softer than trying to do crunches on the hard floor.
I'm also a big fan of exercise DVDs...

Exercise ball... not a bad idea. It's probably more gentle than regular situps.
Elliptical machine is more quiet compared to treadmills. I do not want to disturb my neighbours. It's probably more gentle to the knees as well.

There's a few things that are used in Pilates that are interesting. Exercise Balls, rollers (long cylindrical things), stretchy strap thingos.
I've got a back problem and find these things really good for protecting against further injury.
It takes a while to get to learn how to use them to maintain core stability.

If knees are an issue, you might want to also look at a recumbent bike. Bonus - you can browse Newsweek while you sweat.

This one would probably give a nice suntan as well ;-)
