Hi, all. I'm about 3.5 months pregnant right now. Went off my meds in January to get pregnant...was doing just fine until I actually *got* pregnant... Now my moods are all over the place. One day thrilled, the next, depressed beyond belief.
Has anyone experienced this? And what did you do to cope? I can go back on my meds (wellbutrin), but the baby might be born slightly dependent on it and experience some withdrawal symptoms for the first couple of weeks. Obviously, this doesn't sound great to me, but neither does major depression, or worse. I have no idea what post-partum might bring for me.
Any ideas/advice would be much appreciated.

If you really need the meds (and it sounds like you do) and if your docs agree, then you might want to go back on it. You can always try to wean yourself off a few weeks before delivery and restart meds once you have the baby.

I got depressed during both of my pregnancies- for the first 4 months. It seemed to coincide with my morning sickness. As soon as the sickness went away, the depression lifted.
I wasn't severely depressed or suicidal-- with my 2nd son, it actually was worse during that pregnancy. I slept a LOT and cried a LOT but once I hit around 5 months, I felt actually happier and calmer as the progesterone increased.
If I were you, I would give it another month or two... You might be surprised at how much better you will feel when you are closer to the end of the 2nd trimester.
IF you are still having a hard time, and if you have tried changing your diet and walking every day- and ALL ELSE fails... than I would talk to the dr. about going back on the meds.
I know it's so tough to decide so I will pray for you- that this would lift soon so you don't have to make a tough choice.
BUT... whatever you have to decide, please don't feel guilty- that will only make it worse.
As for post partum, do you plan on nursing??
For some reason, nursing helped my post partum so much. I think it helps your body/chemistry get back into place easier and faster ( it also helped me drop serious weight!).

>That's very encouraging information, thanks! Yes, I do plan to try really hard to nurse (have no idea how difficult it is), at least for 6 months. It's interesting that that might have a positive effect on my moods. I was just planning on being a wreck and miserable for several months after the baby was born. ;-)

I read a bit on it for you and apparently nursing does really help with post partum.
Nursing releases " endorphins" which is the "feel good neurotransmitter" so it does help give you a calmer, happier mood.
I noticed this myself ( I only nursed one of my two children and there was a noticeable post partum difference for the better when I nursed).
I think it's safe for you to take fish oil while pregnant- Omega 3's. I know they have been proven to help depression as well.
Maybe you could ask your doctor about that..I hope you feel relief soon and I will pray now that you will have a smooth transition post partum and just be so incredibly blessed/happy with your new baby.
(((((hugs))))
Ps. is this your first baby?
If it is and you have questions, let me know. I'd be glad to help. I have an 11 year old and a soon to be 7 year old.

I just started posting again, and I don't really know you, but I've read some of your posts about your son having autism. So does my step-son, off-the-charts severe. He's 11 too. It's all pretty new for me, but I felt a bit of a kinship with you. :)
This is my first child, my husband's 4th. And I basically have no idea what I'm doing. :D

>Thanks. :) Good to hear things are going well. Other than freaky crying jags, things are good here, too. I had a screening test for Down Syndrome and Trisomy, and while they didn't completely rule out those two issues, the screening reduced my odds from 1 in 100 to 1 in 1,100. So I should have been thrilled, instead, I cried all the way home in the car feeling miserable. Who knows why? :D
