Is chloride from swimming pools bad 4 yer

Posted by saturn on May 14, 2006, at 15:05:48

eyes, skin (mine is very sensitive), lungs, other?

I'm thinking of taking up swimming. As a child this was mostly in lakes (which I'm sure has its own risks), but I'm thinking of going to a local pool.

Can it cause premature wrinkling/aging, inflammation, etc...?

Thanks

Peace

Supposedly, there's an increased risk of skin cancer (this, from a girl who spent her youth sitting around swim pools, unSPF'ed, and super freckled). But, unless you're allergic (and my brother is!), it shouldn't be so bad for you, if you don't pickle yourself in it.

I mean, there's a trade-off. I also swam in lakes and streams a lot when I grew up (and swam in pools, because I was on swim team). On the one hand, there's the clorine that kills all the germs; on the other hand, there are the lakes and streams that have all kinds of critters and bateriums and loosey goosies frolicking in them. Either/or. A

Some pools use other methods of "disinfecting" their pools (Europe has a whole different system, entirely, that's much healthier). I think Ozone is one. A much safer one, at that. There may be other methods.

Are you really going to swim? Let me know. I've been thinking of going back to the pool myself--it would be good for me--and I need a swift kick in the *rse to do it.

Hi Honeybee,

Yes, I went swimming last week. It was good but I kept getting water in my nose, even with a noseplug. It was definitely a good workout...not sure if I plan to stick with it though. How bout yourself?

First I have to get myself in the pool! : ). Since I work in NYC, it can be such a hassle to get around, get to the gym, get to the pool, without going home to spruce up in between (okay, clearly you can see I'm well stocked with excuses). But it's tempting. Especially because I'll be stopped from obsessibly checking my heart rate while I'm in the pool!!!

One thing I would suggest for the water up the nose situation is this: practice breathing out of your nose in the water. I would ditch the nose plug because it prevents you from getting in the habit of always breathing out of your nose underwater. It's an unnatural habit for most people, but it really works. If you're doing crawl, breathe in to the side, breathe out of your nose under water, turn your head breath in, breathe out underwater. Etc.

I'm probably oversimplifying. But in the long run, it really works!

I hope your pool has a sauna or a steam room. Really, I think my whole swimming idea is just to give me an excuse to veg out in the sauna.
