First I have to get myself in the pool! : ). Since I work in NYC, it can be such a hassle to get around, get to the gym, get to the pool, without going home to spruce up in between (okay, clearly you can see I'm well stocked with excuses). But it's tempting. Especially because I'll be stopped from obsessibly checking my heart rate while I'm in the pool!!!
One thing I would suggest for the water up the nose situation is this: practice breathing out of your nose in the water. I would ditch the nose plug because it prevents you from getting in the habit of always breathing out of your nose underwater. It's an unnatural habit for most people, but it really works. If you're doing crawl, breathe in to the side, breathe out of your nose under water, turn your head breath in, breathe out underwater. Etc.
I'm probably oversimplifying. But in the long run, it really works!
I hope your pool has a sauna or a steam room. Really, I think my whole swimming idea is just to give me an excuse to veg out in the sauna.
