Am I just really out of shape?

Posted by Deneb on April 7, 2006, at 22:50:03

I was just reading the thread on the main board about running and I'm thinking, "Why can't I run?"

I've never been able to do any vigorous exercise without vomiting or almost fainting.

From kindergarten to now, I've never been able to run or do vigorous exercise for a small length of time. I used to vomit and feel nauseous and faint all the time in my physical education class.

This is part of the reason why I don't like to exercise. I'm trying to exercise more now, but I still can't exercise vigorously. I can't jog for more than 3 or 4 minutes without feeling out of breath and sick to my stomach. If I continue I know I will start blacking out. I mostly speed walk. Walking I can do forever.

Even just trudging through the snow, I blacked out several times (I lost my vision and hearing, but I didn't fall to the ground).

Is there something wrong with me? Have I just been really out of shape my whole life or is there something wrong with my heart or something?

hmm.
i can't run now because of injury but i remember one day before my injuries (maybe a couple months before) i decided i was going to take up jogging.

i walked down to the river and began to jog... and i jogged for maybe 30 seconds and had to go back to a walk because DAMN! it was hard to breathe (i'm a fairly heavy smoker too though i'll admit). so if you manage to do a couple minutes then IMO that is pretty good cause i couldn't do more than 30 seconds of jogging at a time.

hrm. do you exercise at all? i don't. but if you don't then that would explain why you aren't so fit.

re: fainting and stuff...

maybe mention it when you go to your GP next so they can check your heart etc. just to check.

maybe... well... when i was at school i hated phys ed. in fact i hated it so much i used to faint and stuff too because i didn't want to run around the field dammit.

maybe it is about that?
but maybe not. be good to have a check up just to check.

Id talk to your doc about that. Sounds unusual to me, maybe you have low Blood pressure?

About 4 months ago my blood pressure was checked to be 100/70. I think that's normal.

I think maybe I'm just really out of shape. I've never actually fainted to the ground before, I just start losing my vision and hearing and feel nauseous.

I'll ask about a good exercise routine for me next time I see the doctor.

It's good to know I'm not alone in not being able to jog! Have you ever thought of quiting smoking?

I don't really exercise on a regular basis, no. Once in a while I walk on the treadmill. My aunt recently gave me her exercise bike and I ride it sometimes.

I've had my heart checked in the past when my blood pressure was doing crazy things. They did some sort of ultrasound or something of my heart and they put me on a 24 hour heart monitor. Everything was normal.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I never liked racing and running around the field.

I think maybe I'm just really out of shape, but I haven't told my doctor about the going blind and deaf thing, so I'll tell her next time.

I tried going out for a jog today and I was wrong about being able to jog 3-4 minutes. It's more like 1 minute! I guess time slows to a crawl when I'm jogging! Seriously, jogging shouldn'y be this difficult for a 24 year old like me! Sheesh!

I didn't jog long enough to feel nauseous, but I did feel a bit light-headed after each jog.

Maybe you're not breathing deeply enough while exercising? It does kind of sound like you might be hyperventilating, and end up panting instead of breathing. I have a hard time with it; like I can either breathe properly, or I can try to run (and I can't). Doing both is just beyond me. There's that multitasking thing again.

Do you feel better if you put your head between your knees?

Maybe, I'm not sure.

I don't know if it's hyperventilation. When I hyperventilate, my hands tingle.

Yes, I think so.

I talked to my Mom about it and she had the exact same problem when she was young and had to run for school. Maybe it's genetic...

Maybe I was born out of shape. :-(
