carpal tunnel release and ulnar transposition

Posted by mike99 on April 6, 2006, at 4:35:20

Has anyone had both of these done at the same time (on the same arm)?

If so I would greatly appreciate any experiences with this, particularly with regard to recovery.

Also, might anyone have had carpal tunnel fixed on both hands at the same time? One doc suggested against this, which seems smart for obvious reasons, yet this would add additional costs and time etc... having two separate surgeries instead of having it all done at one time. Thanks for any info.

Hi,
I haven't had either of these surgeries myself, but I've had some experience in what the recovery is like. I definitely understand the time and money issue with having them done together, but I would strongly encourage you not to do this. If you had both wrists done at the same time, you will not have a hand available for bearing weight for a week or so. This could be risky given that if we lose our balance and feel as if we're falling, it's a reflex to reach out to steady yourself. If you caught yourself on the hand while it's just beginning to heal, you could do some damage. Also, I think you'd be dependent on someone to do very basic tasks for you (like feed you maybe or bathing/grooming, etc), because both arms would be bulkily wrapped for at least a day or two.

If you need to do any post-op rehab or home exercises/stretches, these often require the use of the other hand to stretch or stabilize.

I had all of my wisdom teeth removed in one feel swoop when I was a teen. I didn't want to go through the ordeal twice, so having them all done made sense. I would never do that again if I had to do it over. I couldn't eat because of the pain on both sides.

However you have this done, I wish you a successful outcome and speedy recovery.

gg

thanks gg,

I also had all of my wisdom teeth removed at once...and I think one hand at a time is the best approach as you suggest. Thanks.
