creaky joints, popping knees, how is OA diagnosed?

Posted by mike99 on March 22, 2006, at 18:15:28

Are creaky joints and popping knees (and they pop a LOT) abnormal? One doc told me as long as it's not painful it's nothing to worry about...but I have doubts about this.

Also, can osteoarthritis be diagnosed or ruled out with an x-ray?

I'm in my 20's and male...so I haven't had any success with a doc seriously working up my concern of arthritis. My hand joints (PCP's) are quite large and I even saw a rheumatologist regarding it. He didn't pay me much attention and just remarked that I have very skinny fingers but didn't even do an x-ray.

If I insist on an x-ray would this tell me definitely one way or another if arthritis is present?

Thanks for any input.

Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed with a X Ray to the degree if one can see joint degenerative changes on the X Ray. OA, as the “wear and tear” type of arthritis, will sometimes show as a wearing within the joint and sometimes, bone spurring. Given your age, unless you have an injury to a joint that might have caused OA… you’re a bit young for the OA form. RA could be a possibility but pain would be a hallmark and primary symptom.
