Very concerned - possible diabetes?

Posted by ButterflyHigh on September 26, 2005, at 1:09:18

My grandfather had diabetes. For about 3 weeks now, my vision is becoming more and more blurier, I am urinating a lot, w/o drinking excess water, and I'm dizzy among other symptoms, is there a test for Diabetes? I hesitate to go to my PCP doc b/c I have been in there so much for different symptoms, I feel she won't take me seriously.
This is serious - I do not feel right. Some people have told me it's from the detox off of the Xanax and Vicodin - I find that hard to believe. I was told I had a sinus infection last week - put on antibiotics. But the last few days everything seems to be getting really "not right". I'm having hedaches and dizziness and blurred vision bad, despite my efforts in taking an OTC antihistamine. My chest hurts something fierce like pleurisy.
Thanks for letting me vent, I'm really just concerned - and obviously a frikken mess.
Dang!

I'd go to your doctor and say you want to be tested for diabetes. They need to take you seriously and if they don't change doctors.

good luck!

Sorry you're feeling so bad.

The dizziness and chest tightness certainly don't make me think of diabetes, but they are worrisome.

It's wise to be concerned about any chest pain you don't understand - abundance of caution, you know? Not to scare you, but sometimes women have odd symptoms with heart problems/heart attack...different from men's. OTOH, that pain seemingly in the chest can actually be from the abdomen and be bad indigestion or even heartburn. I'd go to the doc, though, because this together with blurred vision makes me worry about blood flow issues...

Definitive tests for diabetes are fasting blood sugar and/or glucose tolerance. Seems most docs will just run the first, unless there's a question. The level of sugar in your blood can pretty much rule diabetes out or confirm it, as far as I know. Not that I'm an expert - just read a lot and worry about it myslef as I am at high risk for it.

Go back - the heck with what the dr. may think. Your health is yours and YOU know your body. If it feels wrong, that's important enough.

Take care and let us know...

hi Butterfly,
yes, you could test your own blood for glucose levels by doing a quick finger prick, but that would be expensive. You'd need to buy a glucose meter and test strips; the total would be a minimum of $50 and maybe $100 to get started.

If you have a friend/fam member nearby, maybe they could help you test your blood using their meter? I know my sisters and I all tried out my dad's glucose meter to test our levels before and after breakfast (we were all normal.)

It would probably be better to go to the doctor and get tested, though. At a minimum, you should call and ask for advice about your other symptoms. They should troubling enough -- esp. the chest pain and dizziness -- that you should get an answer promptly. Don't worry about the doctor's reaction - it's your body and you deserve answers! ;)

I hope you're feeling better soon!

((hugs))

actually it does sound exactly like detox from xanax or the pain med. I have detoxed off both kinds and excessive urination, with dehydration, neasea and all these werid symptoms were part of it - it took months to return to normal.

Yep - I have excessive urination, with dehydration, neasea and all these weird symptoms going ballistic. I am reading a great book, that is explaining that it may take up to 18 months for those drugs to get out of my system.
Got tested for Diabetes - negative :) All is ok, and actually my choesterol is at a low that I haven't been at for about 7 years. My thyroid is ok, so in a nut shell - I am healthy. yay!
What is going on, is that this whole detox off of these drugs, is taking a wicked toll on my mind, body, and emotions.
All I can do is pray, go to meetings, and stress less, I can do this, easy - no - do-able - YES! :o)

Thanks for the posts, I miss posting, but I moved and am busy beyond serenity! lol
