Can your lungs recover from ciggarettes?

Posted by rjlockhart98 on October 5, 2005, at 14:48:04

Well, i have smoked some. Usally most of this summer, thinking its something to get away to.

But i realized when i was doing the lawn yesterday that it was harder to breathe, i had to stop for a second and catch my breath.

The smoke i know clogs the pores in the lungs, but is there like way to recover from it, i have read breathing with ballons... ahh stuff.

Am i stuck like this?

your lungs begin to heal the day you quit smoking. you will always have black scarring on your lungs but you can get better.
i'm a smoker, then quit, then started again. i think they say within 10-12 years your lungs will be like brand new. but every day that you don't smoke helps.

Yeah, it's generally said it takes 10 years for the lungs to recover from regular smoking and 20 pack years (one pack per day for 20 years, or 7300 packs or 146,000 cigarretes) to develop COPD (chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema).

However, once COPD has developed it is irreversible.

Matt, if you stop smoking and excercise. They will heal faster is my understanding. Fondly, Phillipa

I've never smoked, but I drink wheatgrass juice on a regular basis to detoxify my body of all the terrible foods and drugs I've put into in the past. Here's a link that describes its benefits if you're interested: http://members.optushome.com.au/juicers/40_benefits_of_wheatgrass_juice.htm
