rheumatoid arthritis

Posted by alienatari on August 9, 2005, at 21:09:45

hey all. ive just been diganosed with rheumatoid arthritis and I am in a lot of pain. i am not sure what painkillers I can take as I cant take any of the nSAIDS and Im kind of scared of the COX-2 inhibitors because of the whole viox thing. Anyone know a painkiller that would work with the meds I take? That being 1000mg of valproate, 20mg of diazapam, 200mg of chlomipramine and 5mg of olanzapine (but my olanzapine is probably going to be changed to 50mg of Largactil (thorazine) as its not doing anything but make me fat).

Thanks and take care :)

You really need to go to a rheumatologist. There are all sorts of new meds for rheumatoid arthritis. All cox-2s have been pulled from the market except for Celebrex. Most NSAIDS will destroy your stomach. I know depakote is rough on it. Good luck.

Hi Chris
I don't know how to put in a direct link, but you might be interested in goimg to Life Extension Foundation, www.lef.org, and search their protocols for rheumatoid arthritis, they have all sorts of useful things there. As for painkillers I don't think it's easy. NSAIDs are awful for me.

Hi Chris,

>...I am in a lot of pain...

:-( I had no idea :-(

How long have you been in pain?

>I cant take any of the NSAIDs...

Why not?

Rheumatoid arthritis is normally treated with DMARDs, methotrexate is the most popular. Methotrexate is a powerful ant-inflammatory drug which slows the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. It's not an NSAID but it will relieve the pain (by reducing the inflammation). Methotrexate is generally taken *once weekly* as a tablet.

Some more popular DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.........

leflunomide
sulfasalazine
minocycline

........there are many more.

Some DMARDs have alternative uses eg. minocycline is used as an antibiotic and to treat severe acne. Sulfasalazine is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Methotrexate is used to treat psoriasis and certain types of cancer.
