here's my mono story in a nutshell....i thought i had strep (because I've probably had that 50 times in my life already), so i was taking amoxycillin from my dentist/uncle rather than go through the doc again. didn't do anything, so I went and saw the doc, got blood tested and tested positive for mono. that was roughly SIX MONTHS ago, and I still have a low grade fever pretty much 24/7, and off and on very swollen glands in my throat. Is it normal that this can last this long?
I read up to two years? Would it be worth going back to the doc, is there anything she would prescribe to at least help ease the pain/fevers. I can't keep taking nonstop OTC painkillers. Thanks

I had mono in the 7th grade and it lasted for about 4 months but took me several years to feel back to normal again (and actually, I don't think my immune system ever fully recovered!).
Anyway, yes, I would ask for some type of pain reliever. The OTC is tough on your liver- maybe see if you can get something like Hydrocodone. I have off and on fevers/fatigue/achy stuff and that seems to help me.
Sorry you feel so poorly.
Make sure you are on a good vitamin/mineral support and drinking lots of water (also some pure cranberry juice).

If you already got diagnosed, I would just call and leave a message for the medicine. Don't wait and suffer. I remember how horrible I felt..
I am sure your doctor won't have a problem with that.
I hope you can get relief soon.
((hugs))

Just found out yesterday I have Epstein Barr.. I suppose it's the same thing as mono. Not sure.
I see the doctor again next week.
I had no idea you could get this twice!

I got mono about the same time I started posting here. Maybe this site is infected?
Seriously, though, do go back to the doctor, because those OTC pills are hard on your liver -- which is already limping along because of the mono. You don't want any more stress on your liver right now.
As for how long it lasts, I was about as weak as a kitten for several months, and still needed a daily nap of about half the day for maybe a year and a half. Of course, I was also in my mid 30s, and I was sick enough to be in the hospital for it. For several weeks, I was too weak to swallow more than a few sips of soup -- and chewing was right out of the question.
No doubt about it, mono is horrible. It does eventually ease away, though. Good luck and I hope that easing thing happens soonest for you.
This is the end of the thread.
