my sleep schedule is atrocious

Posted by MichaelJr on June 24, 2005, at 4:24:15

I have been struggling with my sleep for about a year. I get tired between 5am and 9am, and sleep between 8 and 10 hours. I was a student and recently graduated, so I have no obligations in my life. I would like to find a job but it is hard when you sleep all day.

I don't have much self discipline, so setting an alarm clock never worked for me.

I went to a sleep center and they gave me a sleep therapy. they said stay up 2 hours later every day. I finally did it a couple weeks ago and it was working well I think. but then I went out with friends one night and was hammering red bull and vodka, was wired all night, and it took me back to the old schedule. very frustrating.

I am restarting the therapy, and it wlil be about a week before I am back to normal. I will just have to accept the fact that I can't stay out late on the weekends for awhile. still, this has been very frustrating for me over the past year. I just want to get to bed at a normal hour and wake up at a normal time like every else.

it is nice to be up at night though. no traffic and it's always peace and quiet. I think I avoid life and issues with my sleep schedule.

I'll post here on my progress. hopefully I will not have sleep issues for that much longer.

I have the same problem. I set lots of alarms but I end up shutting them off and going back to bed or hitting the snooze button a hundred times.

Pushing my schedule forward a few hours each night has worked in the past but I don't stay at the right schedule because I have a longer than 24 hour cycle. I should be using a lightbox first thing in the morning to keep myself on schedule when I do get it to where I want it. It also helps to take melatonin to get myself to sleep earlier. I just haven't had the motivation to do the things I need to do to fix the situation.

Good luck. I hope you're more successful than I've been.

I now get up at 4 or 5am, but I remember often going to sleep around sunrise. That way you have the best part of the day to yourself, no sun (In Australia the sun is a pain), and of course avoid life and the issues That was when I was a student too. Can you meet some interesting goths or something? It's a nice time. Are you sure you want to be up in the day? You'll have plenty of practice at it later on.

I don't know about MichaelJr. but I don't like being awake at night and sleeping during the day. I can't get anything accomplished. Every office is closed and and all of the stores are closed. TV doesn't have anything good on. I'm bored with the night time.

How can you not like the sun? I love a really sunny day with bright blue sky.
