Sleep deprivation?? at what point is it too much?

Posted by rainbowbrite on June 19, 2005, at 20:47:00

How long can a person go sleeping 2-3 hours a night? Will I get sick? Its been awhile, Im starting to feel similar things in my head to what I experienced with effexor. does anyone know what this is?

Thanks

Well dang, I swear I posted, but I don't see it here.

I recently gave a presentation on CBT for insomnia, and I used this list of signs of sleep deprivation.
Signs (in order of increasing impairment and in order of increasing sleep deprivation)
Irritability
Moodiness
Disinhibition
Apathy
Slowed speech
Flat affect
Impaired memory
Difficulty multitasking
Falls into “micro-sleeps” affecting attention
Falls asleep while doing activities
Hypnologic hallucinations, the beginning of REM sleep.

I hope what you are seeing is near the top of the list rather than near the bottom. If near the bottom, get thee to bed!

Hope this helps.

Hi Rainbow. Why aren't you sleeping? Are you on any meds that might be causing or contributing to the insomnia, or are you taking them too late in the day? Is there something going on in your life that is causing you more anxiety than usual and/or causing you to worry at night?

I dont know....I just dont love sleep that much and so I dont put any effort into it. I know this sounds silly, but I go through fazes with sleep...sometimes I sleep alot, other times I dont sleep at all, and then other times I sleep as I am now. In part this was why I was thought to be bipolar at one time.
I do have alot going on, stressful stuff...but it is kind of always going on around me in the back ground. this has been going on for about 3 months now.
Maybe it is stress and I dont even realize how bad. Im just getting concerned about my mind, its really foggy. so Im worried about long term effects? Do you know anything about that?

Actually, those are hynogogic (sp?) from what I found online last night. I was confused, too. In my presentation, I glossed over that one and prayed no one asked questions! ;)

Hynologic hallucinations seem to be when you wake up, are still paralyzed from sleep, and you see or sense something. So I think the difference is the paralysis and the timing. Hypnogogic seems to be when falling asleep, hypnologic seems to be upon wakening. But I could be wrong. It was not clear to me from what I could find on the internet, and my neuro book is at work.

Doesn't sound good, but some of those symptoms may also be related to ADHD. But 4 hours doesn't sound like enough. Is this crunch time at school or something?

No it's all the stuff she's trying to decide right now. How many rings for the wedding, which dress to wear, is slinky sneeking around on her. I won't mention with whom. Who could sleep with all this going on? But seriously you really need more than four hours sleep. Fondly, Phillipa

your right. i know I need serious catch up too. Maybe Ill take extra drugs tonight. my face has started getting tingly and numb and my head is pounding so I am going to assume that is sleep related and that Im not having a stroke.
