I'm new to this forum, found it doing a search for L-Tyrosine somehow.
Anyway, I'm a 37-yr-old female who is moderately overweight. Two years ago I went to have my teeth cleaned and they wouldn't do it because my bp was 213/120, high enough that they urged me to go straight to an ER! I went to a walk-in clinic and was given Altace and something to bring it down asap. I had to come back every afternoon for a week because they thought it was "white-coat hypertension" but it ended up being the real deal. I didn't want to take the Altace because I was breastfeeding our daughter so I didn't.
A few months later I had a major heart palpitation episode(first one I've ever had) and went to the ER. They recommended me to a internal medicine doctor and she put me on Vasotec(5mg). I've had NO side effects and my bp is in the normal range now.
I highly recommend the book, How to Lower Your Blood Pressure in 8 Weeks, by Dr. (forgot first name) Sinatra. Also, are you modifying your diet? My doctor wants me to watch my salt, some people with high bp are salt-sensitive, some are not.
There are some really good cookbooks that can help you add healthy meals to your diet. I cook a lot from Oat Cuisine by Bobbie Hinman, Cooking Vegetables the Italian Way by Judith Barrett, The American Heart Association's(AHA) Low-Salt cookbook, and Bean, Pea and Lentil Cookbook by Maria Luisa Scot, Jack Denton Scott and the editors of Consumer Reports Books.
Even though I've modified my diet, started exercising, started taking supplements(vitamin, mineral, herbal) and so forth, I am still taking my meds because high bp causes damage.
I hope you are doing ok with your meds, you wrote about taking them on May 20th. How is it going so far?

Welcome, Molly. My niece is named Molly.
If you want to talk about tyrosine, the board you probably want is the Alternative board. That's where we talk about amino acids and nutrients and such.

Thank you! I just took a peep over there, whoa there is a TON of information. Looks like I'll lurk and read for a while.

Hi Molly the new kid!
I've only been here a couple of months myself. I have had a VERY stressful last 10 years. The last two years I regained 80 pounds I had lost and a bit more. I have lost almost 25 pounds of that in the last couple months.
At this point I really don't care if I am salt sensitive or not, I'm doing good just to try and moderate my calories. I can't exercise because I have major orthopedic problems. I'm only in my early 50s, but I have to walk with a cane, and at the rate I'm going a walker isn't going to be too far in the future.
I just got medical insurance after 18 months without, and while they will cover the blood pressure meds, they won't address the orthopedic issues. I'm not on any ADs right now, either, and I probably really need to be. And we just found out the insurance we have had for two months will be changed to another company in a few weeks!
I did take the Avapro at a very low dose, and other than some stomach issues and cramps, I did okay on it. My pressure came down a little bit, but not near enough.
I, too, need to go to the dentist. I have a huge hole in my tooth. Now I just have to find one who is on my insurance, is very good, and won't stress me any out further or freak out at my still somewhat high blood pressue.
Welcome to P-Babble and thanks for all the good information.

I've got pulled ligaments on the top of my left foot and some days I can hardly walk, let alone exercise(even swimming hurts it). I also think I may have CMT(Charcot Marie Tooth disease) and that could be part of my foot pain problems. My doctor is on me to start walking but with slight agoraphobia it is not likely to happen.

Have you seen your doctor since? There may be more/different meds that work better for you. I see my doctor every 3-4 months for monitoring. It would be nice if I could drop it down to 6 months because I DON'T have insurance and every vist is $70!! Ouch!
Anyway, glad you are doing ok with the meds.

Molly,
I went to the doctor yesterday and it was 143/85 and he is quite pleased. That is on 1/2 the usual starting dose for Avapro. I'm having to up my Prilosec for my stomach and will try to increase my Omega 3 fish oil which seem to be helping the depression a bit. The Avapro will stay at 75 mg.
I hope you don't have CMT--yes I actually do know what that is! I have bad arthritis in both knees and collapsing discs in my lower back. I understand the agoraphobia too. I think I may have a mild form of that in addition to depression.
Thanks for responding to my post and take care!
Hugs,
MidnightBlue
