We have 2 teenagers who get very sick hours after eating salmon. has happened more than once. This includes dry heaves for hours after it starts.
my wife and I eat it too and do not get sick.
I've searched the web and can't find any specifics on if there is a known food alergy to salmon or what.
Any ideas?

You can be allergic to anything, really. You don't have to have something that someone else has been documented as having...
This is a board about eating disorders, rather than eating in general, so I can't tell you anything about how a salmon allergy will show up. I can suggest that you read up on food allergies in general -- ALL allergies tend to get worse over time, so it's good to be familiar with their mechanisms -- and to try posting this on the Health board -- there's a guy there who seems to know more about this sort of thing than my last doctor...
Hope that helps.

Someone in my family is allergic to anything that comes out of the water. Salmon included. i would bet that is the problem, you can get allergy tests to confirm it though.

Have the times your children got sick been from salmon from the same source or have you noticed the problem happening when they eat salmon in and from different places? The reason I ask is that I used to get sick when I'd purchase salmon from a local supermarket even though my roommate at the time could eat salmon from there without any problem. I've only gotten sick on it once when eating out however so most of the time it isn't a problem. Also, when I buy frozen salmon from Trader Joe's I don't have a problem. This makes me wonder if my getting sick had to do with something that the supermarket treated it with or maybe something the salmon came in contact with when it was raised (or encountered in the wild)?Kara

> Any ideas? An allergy does sound like the most likely explanation.....but it might not be to the fish. Something they eat, can pass in the flesh. As can small parasites.
Can they eat canned salmon? This is actually possible, in some scenarios. Being allergic to fresh but canned is safe.
An alternative to try (if they're willing to risk it) is to find an absolutely assuredly different source of the fish. That would rule out the "waters of origin" sensitivities.
Be cautious, though, if you expose them to other types of fish. They may have become more sensitive to a particular protein in fish. So, if you do try, smaller dose, and a little patience go a long way.
I had a link to link here, but my computer crashed (second night in a row) and I need to check out why it's doing that. If you're still interested, I'll dig up the link for ya later.
Best,
Lar
