I am totally screwed!!!!! :(

Posted by alienatari on April 30, 2005, at 12:06:21

Hey all. So remember how i posted how I have been kicked out of university for this semester? Well because of this I lose my medical insurance, under my plan I had to be a university student. And guess what? I need surgery :(

My wisdom teeth are infected and it really hurts, im on antibiotics and painkillers (codeine) and it doesnt really help much but once the infection is gone I have to have the surgery (they are impacted so I cant just get them out at the dentist i have to be under a general anasthetic) and I dont know if that will be covered under my insurance. I dont know what to do :(
I havent told my insurance company about the uni situation yet. God Im actually more scared that I might have to go to a psych ward or something soon, the public ones are BAD!!!! I had a horrible time being in private psych wards, I couldnt imagine how bad it would be in the public ones and after visiting my friends that were in them its something that Id never want to experience. Anyway, thanks for reading and take care. I think I'll go lay down now as Im feeling rather ill.

Are you sure you need to be under general anesthesia? I had my wisdom teeth removed at the dentists...they were impacted. I wanted to be put to sleep via IV sedation, but my mom didn't allow it. I was given Ativan and nitrous oxide, but the Ativan wasn't enough to stop me from my panic attack. The nitrous oxide made me hyperventilate and panic more. I ended up not using the nitrous oxide. I turned the volume on my CD player WAY up and listened to Nirvana and just dissociated to deal with it...it was very scary, there was no pain, but I could feel the pressure of the scalpel on my gums and pressure from the fracturing of the tooth and subsequent extraction. On the bright side, there was no pain and it was relatively cheap. I didn't have insurance. If one can get over the fear...there shouldn't be any problems, no pain whatsoever.

One more thing, did you have to speak to the anesthetist? Im just a bit concerned about medication interactions as I dont know if I have to stop any of my meds before the surgery. Thanks.

I know a lot of people who have had impacted wisdom teeth removed without general anesthesia. In fact when I was a kid they didn't even use novacaine to drill teeth. Oh the dark ages! But, before I had the p surgery the anesthesiologist called me and asked all the meds I was on. So try not to worry about that. Just remember when it rains it pours. I'm thinking of you. Fondly, Phillipa

I wasn't on any meds back then, so I don't know about interactions. You'll have the ask.

aa,

You may be able to visit your nearest medical school and have those pulled out at little-to-no expense. There is no reason that you are *required* to go under, but you might reconsider such hesitancy.

I had my wisdoms pulled by my dentist, as opposed to an oral surgeon. Strictly novacaine and would highly recommend not going this route as it can be painful if not done correctly, but also traumatic.

Best of luck in getting to the roots of those bad boys!

Regards,

M.W.

What country are you in? i think in the US there are laws abt being able to pay extra $ to keep your insurance for a few months between jobs, etc. At least I think so...I'm not too good with that sort of thing, but it is worth asking friends and family how that works.

Also, i wanted to weigh in on the wisdom teeth. I had mine out at an oral surgeon--like most everyone i know in my age group and part of the country. Mine was very straight forward, but they put me out and it made it so easy. The experience shy girl described sounds awful! I say if there is any way to be put out, do it!

Also, when I had mine done I was on paxil and wellbutrin and it was no problem.

Good luck w/ everything. Keep us posted!

Thanks Matt. I dont know, Im kinda scared about going to the public places here in Australia after seeing what they have done to people I know. My Dad manages a hospital and he knows this guy, says hes a good surgeon (i hope so) so I'm hoping all goes well. Take care.

Thank you, thats good to hear that your experience was good. Everyone ive known too with wisdom teeth that were impacted had them done under a general too. I didnt realise you could do it any other way. Surgery is booked in 3 weeks from now, waiting until the infection has cleared up. Im in Sydney Australia, I hope my insurance still covers it, I didnt realise that insurance companies do what you have just said I will have to look that up. Thanks again and take care. :)
