Is it at ALL possible.. hypoglycemia?

Posted by Spriggy on April 14, 2005, at 14:45:43

Is there any possibility that the hypoglycemia is causing most of my symptoms?

I'm almost beginning to wonder if I have some chronic fatigue going on too. I feel "feverish" off and on several times a week. I almost feel like I constantly have the "flu."

It's ridiculous.

I wake up with those butterflies jumping in my stomach (or doing cartwheels is more like it!).

I have the shakiness, I have fainted, my blood sugar can fall to about 62.

If I got VERY strict on my diet, I wonder if I could correct all these symptoms on my own.

Or I am in denial. LOL

It's one or the other..

Hi Spriggy,

Hypoglycemia can result in all kinds of physical symptoms. The thing you need to keep in mind also is that diabetics can also experience episodes of hypoglycemia (so, it's possible that the blood sugar highs and lows you are experiencing may be the result of uncontrolled diabetes). There are some nutritional supplements that you can take to help stabilize your blood sugar, including chromium. Anyway, I don't know too much about either hypoglycemia or diabetes, but here is a website that describes hypoglycemia, including symptoms and what can cause it, very well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoglycemia#Signs_and_symptoms_of_hypoglycemia

Not to be a nudge or anything, but I don't think you should give up on having a thorough examination of your thyroid function. The reason I say this is because of what you had said the ER doctor had told you. I think your family doctor has decided that you are bipolar with an anxiety disorder and that is the final diagnosis. I just think there are some unanswered questions that need to be addressed before you accept that diagnosis. One thing that astounds me is that he seems so almost unconcerned about a 26 year old (I think you had said you were 26 - sorry if I got that wrong) having heart palps without looking for an underlying cause other than anxiety. Don't get me wrong, having suffered from anxiety and depression and having had friends and even a sister-in-law who are bipolar, for me there is no stigma in having a mental illness. I just think sometimes doctors do not do the proper testing before reaching such a diagnosis. Anyway, that is my rant. Sorry.

I hope your doctor(s) can get to the bottom of things soon. Just to let you know, I am going to not be posting for a while, but if you have any questions you think I may be able to answer or you just need to vent or chat, don't hesitate to babble me. I will leave my babblemail on. Hang in there Spriggy and take good care of you. My thoughts are with you.

Tamara

Yes, I am only 26. I want to say they called my heart problem something like "supervantrical tachyrdia" or something spelled like that. LOL

I know today even, as I just made up a bed, my heart raced so badly and hit 140 beats! Before all this started, I was running many miles a day.

One thing I definitely am now wondering about is a yeast connection. I started having yeast infection (chronically) right before all this began- I even had thrush in my mouth.

My doctor has all that documented becuase they treated it.

I think I may have some candida thing going on right now. I might try approaching it from that point of view just to see if I improve.

My doctor actually called me last night to check on me- I think my heart results seem to make him realize this was more than just a mental disorder. He even suggested I go see a cardiologist.

So maybe that was an eye opener for him, not sure.

He really is a nice guy- just seems to be a bit closed minded.

Thanks for all your help Tamara. You are a blessing to me.

Hi Spriggy,

I just wanted to provide you with a website (similar to the hypoglycemia site) with comprehensive information on diabetes. Interestingly, I read that diabetes is often detected when a person suffers problems caused by diabetes including, among other things, fungal infections.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus#Signs_and_symptoms

I also wanted to suggest a book to you that I have found very interesting and informative entitled "The Diet Cure" by Julia Ross. It is a book that provides an 8-step program to rebalance body chemistry and end food cravings, weight problems and mood swings. It talks about thyroid problems, blood sugar problems, blood sugar problems, food allergies, and others. I think you may find the book interesting and informative. There is even a clinic, called Recovery Systems Clinic, where all kinds of testing is done and people are treated for whatever problems are identified through the testing (I can't say for sure, but I believe it may be a combination of blood tests and saliva tests). Anyway, the clinic is in California, and information about the clinic can be obtained at (415) 458-8446. If I lived in California or close to California, I would be trying to make an appointment for myself. Unfortunately, it would cost me a thousand dollars or more just to get there.

The other interesting thing I read in the book (I had forgotten this, and just came across it again when I was looking through the book yesterday), that a national physicians' directory is available through the Broda O. Barnes Research Foundation. Broda Barnes was an M.D. who spent his entire career studying and treating the thyroid. The foundation strongly promotes a thorough evaluation of both thyroid and adrenal function. I am in the process of trying to get a copy of the directory. When I get a copy, I will share it with you.

Anyway, sorry this message got so long. You take care and keep hanging in there.

All the best to you,

Tamara

Tam,
Thank you dearly. I'm going to try an order that book today (amazon.com rocks!).
Girl, you are so smart. You should be a doctor.. :)
Thanks for always listening and being so helpful.
You bless me!

Spriggy, If I hadn't been looking I wouldn't have seen this post. I'm so glad your doc wants you to see a cardiologist what with all the problems your Dad has. Fondly, Phillipa
