Well, after my blood sugar got down to 57 and I blacked out, my dh took me into the ER.
I found out a few things; first the ER could only do a few test for my thyroid ( I think he said 2 of 6 tests). One came back abnormal which he said indicated I likely have hyperthyroid (DUH!).
They also did an EKG that came back abnormal so they now have me wearing this 24 hour heart monitor. My kids' are loving this thing. My 5 year old thinks I am "buzz lightyear." LOL
He said my regular doctor should do some type of ultrasound on this "lump" but he didn't seem to have the time to do much else.
So here I am. No REAL answers/solutions just yet but I guess some of the tests are at least out of the way!
He told my the feeling like I can't breathe/swallowing thing is likely related to the hyperthyroid. And of course I got the whole, " try not to focus on your breathing and swallowing" speech- which is kind of hard not to do when you feel like you CAN'T. LOL
Anyway, he seemed bothered that my doctor immediately has me on all these psych drugs before ruling out all these physical problems. He said, " Why did he even go down that road first?"
To which I replied, " I think because of my family history."
Regardless, until I know what is going on for certain, I don't think stoping all these meds will be wise either; Lamictal, Klonopin, Restoril, etc..
Even if it is my thyroid and blood sugar, it still sends my anxiety through the roof and makes it unmanageable.
Just thought I'd update you all. And a big thanks to Larry, who suggested I go to the ER asap! You were right Lar!

Yikes Spriggy! I'm so sorry you ended up in the ER! Did the ER docs mention if the psych meds could make your hyperthyroid worse? I can't remember which med it was I was taking that someone told me could raise my blood sugar. Could it be possible that something you are on could lower yours?
I really hope they get to the bottom of this fast. Keep us posted!

Hi.
You are wearing the Holter monitor? Those are fun. Hyperthyroidism can cause heart problems so really you and your doctor have to get on top of this. Don't forget to mention progesterone cream you used.I swear, any doctor who doesn't check the thyroid before prescribing psych meds should be shot.
Take care of yourself.

I'm glad you're keeping us informed. I suspect that when you get your thyroid stabilized, you will be amazed that you really weren't crazy at all. Just overdosing on hormones.

Please don't tell me that they may take the "crazy" off my records because otherwise, I will have a whole of "splain' to do about my behavior. ROFL
And Maxime, when you say "shot" do you have any preference as to which type of bullet? (just kidding!)

Hi Spriggy,
Thanks for updating us all. When I noticed you had stopped posting yesterday afternoon, I figured you had probably gone to the hospital. I am glad that you are finally getting the proper care and attention, and I hope very soon, that the doctors will be able to get your thyroid and blood sugar regulated. It sounds like you had a very good and thorough ER doctor. That is a blessing in itself. I imagine that your family doctor will get a copy of the ER doctors report. Not to be pushy, but you might want to confirm that so that your family doctor has the results of the tests done in hospital. I hope all goes well on Tuesday and that you get the remaining tests done and a proper diagnosis. My goodness, you have been through a lot, and yet your sense of humour and positive attitude seem to still come shining through. You are an amazing person Spriggy.
Take good care of yourself and hang in there,
My thoughts are with you.
All the best to you and your family,
Tamara

As I said in my E-Mail rule out the physical problems first. And if you are indeed hyperthyroid, then your anxiety will probably skyrocket if you stop the downers. Fondly, Phillipa

I'm glad you're getting some proper evaluation.
It's amazing how much an effect the physical stuff has on our mental state. Blood sugars alone can account for a lot. Add in thyroid...
I'm glad you went.
(Thanks Lar)

Phillipa,
I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but her husband might want to get her back to the hospital ASAP.
What she is experiencing sounds very worrysome! I really don't know much about hyperthyroidism (only what I have read in the past number of months), but one thing I did read about was something referred to as a "thyroid crisis" or "thyroid storm". It is said to be a rare condition in people with hyperthyroidism, but is extremely serious because the heart is especially vulnerable to the thyroid hormone and arrhythmias may occur.

Tamara, My God, you're right! I can't believe I didn't think of this. We've been E-mailing back and forth and she's in trouble. Please Babble her and also try to convince her to go to the ER. I've been trying. She's alone with her kids, and her husband is in Church. She needs our help! Fondly, Phillipa. PS Babble me if you have any luck or other thoughts.

I will Babblemail her what I had put in the post here. Perhaps she should call 911 and make arrangements for a friend or neighbor to look after the kids until her husband get home.

I have found something that looks pretty good and comprehensive. I will send it to her as well. I didn't know that a thyroid storm can result from uncontrolled diabetes (but I just read that).
