exercise and blood pressure

Posted by CareBear04 on March 18, 2005, at 18:04:03

i know exercise is supposed to lower blood pressure, especially for those who are overweight or hypertensive. i've looked, but i can't find any information on whether exercise also lowers BP in people with already low blood pressure? my doctor told me that my weight and BP were correlated-- as i gained weight, my BP would go up. this hasn't been the case. i've gained weight steadily, but the BP hasn't gone higher than maybe 88/50. six months ago, i was a normal 120/60. i've been exercising a lot more, and very quickly, i noticed that my pulse was slowing down. for months, it was over 100 bpm and thready, probably in part because of adderall, but now it's slower and steadier. does anyone know why this is? and does exercise lower BP in everyone? maybe the blood is directed away towards muscles or something? i'm asking mostly because i fainted recently after exercising. i'm usually fine while i'm moving, though.

Carebear,

I can't say for sure what is causing your bp to remain low, but some meds can cause hypotension (low blood pressure). My blood pressure tends to be low (I get dizzy a lot when I stand up or if I am standing for long periods of time). When I was on Anafranil, I experienced even more dizziness.

I hope you are doing better otherwise. Take good care of yourself.

Tamara

After excercising do you keep moving around? If you don't and let's say sit down you might faint. The blood pools in your legs. I used to have an aerobics program and one of the cardinal rules was keep walking, take your pulse, if it's too high stop using your arms. Slow cool=down excercises are necessary, or just plain walking. Fondly, Phillipa

thank you both tamaraj and phillipa. your insight has helped a lot. my problems take place more when i've stopped exercising and relax, dipping my feet in a hot tub or by the pool. then, i try to get up and find myself flat on the floor. it could likely be the meds. the trainers at the gym said dehydration, which is another possible cause. thanks!
