exercise is suppose to improve mood right????!!!

Posted by mike lynch on September 19, 2004, at 13:22:46

Well not in my case.. I just started working out again after a pretty long break...(just a note during my previous work outs this was NEVER a problem)

well after my first work out I got the natural high most of us get but then it was followed by a crash??? .. I was depressed...irritable and my outlook on everythig changed.( this was pretty similar to a stimulant crash surprisingly??!!)

. I thought nothing much of it at first as I thought maybe it wouldn't happen the second time around but apparently it did..it is now a day after I completed my workout and I feel just as depressed as after I did after it.. ( i'd at least thing it would subside the next day)

The thing is...I was never depressed per se before starting working out...i felt more along the lines of apathetic...unmotivated...emotionless....now exercise is seemingly triggered a spout of actual depressing feelings..This is one of the few things that was suppose to give me relief..I hate drugs and it is the primary reason I turned to natural means and now apparently the most reccomended forum of an anti-depressant is making me depressed!! This is really strange..I can't find any answers to this researching and I don't think I will here either...unless someone has gone threw it..well that's all

Are you off all drugs? If so, I have read somewhere that coming off antidepressants requires you to calm your central nervous system. Brisk exercise actually ramps it up. I have no idea if this is true, but it is something I read. Personally, now 2 months into coming off Lexapro and Zyprexa I find that exercise is the only thing that keeps me from actually feeling phsically sick. These drugs really screw up the central nervous system and maybe really having a tough workout is a little too much for you right now. Maybe slowing it down and taking some walks or softer exercise might help. All the best

Where are you exercising and what are you doing for exercise?

I found that walking outdoors did wonders before I was on medication. The "crash" you feel is the endorphins wearing off. Try using mental exercises to combat the feelings you're having. Force yourself to visually retrace your steps in your mind and how good you felt breathing the fresh air. It's worth a shot...

I have never heard of anyone who exercises having this problem..the fact is I use to have no problem with it and ever since I went on drugs I suddenly have all these problems..I don't think this is normal..there has to be an imbalance of chemicals or something because this just isn't right.. I shouldn't have to feel CRAPPY after WORKING OUT it's EXERCISE.. one of the best medicine there is.. I shouldn't have to feel crappy doing something i'm suppose to feel the exact opposite from..

DOes it make anysense that all the research suggests exercise improves mood and i'm feeling the exact opposite?? There's something wrong with me..

Well, I am off two months and I am still a mess. I think one answer then is for you NOT to go back on meds to address this. The CNS is a delicate balance and it takes a while for it to correct itself. Patience is so hard. The hardest. But I think that is probably what it is going to take.

That was an interesting thread. I too used to get antidepressant benefit from exercise but no longer do. I don't feel irritable afterwards, but I do crash and feel more depressed, exhuasted and even less motivated than usual. I had been attributing it to adrenal fatigue (as another poster mentioned, cortisol may be involved here). Hypoglycemia may also be a factor since I have that issue. I have only been taking about 19 mg. of Effexor so I doubt it's A/D medication related. Who knows? I also wish that the medical community knew more about this problem - at this point I'd settle for them just taking the issue seriously. Terribly frustrating though. You feel like you can't count on anything anymore to restore health if you can't count on exercise. It feels like such a huge loss.

Ya know what? I'm the same way. If I'm out in the yard mowing the lawn or something I actually feel better but if I get on my treadmill and start running I don't even get the runners high anymore. I start crashing before I even finish working out. Its got to be some cortisol thing or something. I've also often wondered if working out causes the blood levels of AD's to go either lower and not work anymore or higher than I can handle.

I used to love the antidepressant lift I got during and after exercise (even though I didn't always want to do it initially). Unfair is exactly the word. I feel like I have so little that the depression hasn't already taken from me... I keep thinking, though, that I'll figure this out or it will change if I get some other things under control. Maybe I'm kidding myself. I don't know. I hope we both get answers soon.

what up homie, I hear you. Ive felt the same way many times. I too do not feel generally depressed, but apathetic and crappy mood, but not depression. Exercise would bring on a cold and empty feeling, i hated it. But keep one thing in mind, it takes about six weeks for any REAL physiological changes to take place, so if you just started (did you?), maybe that could be it. Also, finding the right program for yourself it very important. oh yeah, my head would hurt too, like my brain could not handle the increased activity, like it was way too much. But now, i definetly get a benefit. I really hope that you can find somthing that works. Good luck

I just started back up...I exercised a year previous to this and stopped because the ssri's took took a way any motivation I once had.. I never had this problem before..only when starting back up..
