For those who have taken it, does metformin really reduce your appetite or does it just make you too nauseated to eat? Are the side effects worse if you eat fattening foods? Will it still reduce your blood glucose if you don`t change your diet or are the glucose lowering effects only because it suppoedly makes you eat less? Cecilia

In reply to Metformin (glucophage) questions, posted by Cecilia on June 1, 2004, at 2:02:36
Glucophage, as I understand it, helps reduce blood glucose by decreasing insulin resistance. That allows the insulin your body produces to bring your blood glucose down. So, no, it's not an appetite suppressant, as such. It's a drug used to treat diabetes.
Don't rely solely on my very limited knowledge, though. I know very little about it. You might try reading through the drug description at the NIH's site, MedlinePlus.com.
