Wellbutrin and AN

Posted by Koneko on July 2, 2006, at 14:22:05

Hi. Long time reader first time poster. :)

I’ve been suffering with an EDO since I was about 12. I'm now 25. I've been in a pretty strong recovery since 2001 with slip ups here and there. I've been on just about every SSRI on the market and they are awful for me. I was on a SNRI called Edronax (Reboxetine) which was a god send. But it's not FDA approved in America so I can't take it in the states. My doc prescribed wellbutrin and I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences with it? I'm a Ph.D clinical psych student and have studied psychopharmacology quite extensively. I know one of the big warnings with wellbutrin is lack of appetite.

I'll be honest and say that part of this warning is appealing to my anorexic side. The healthy side of me is concerned about potentially triggering a relapse. Has anyone used wellbutrin? What was your experience?

My current health status is ok. I eat somewhat normally (for a recovering AN). I am slightly underweight and a little BDD about my stomach but all in all I am highly productive and a successful student/clinician/researcher.

Thank you so much for any thoughts you can share with me!

been cautious in prescribing wellbutrin beause of the increased probability of seizures in persons who are seizure prone( alcoholics, epilepsy, eating disorders, head injuries prior seizure history)--about 10% of persons with anorexia have some history of seizure &/or are thought to be at increased risk of seizures due to nutritional deficits--IANAD but I know of a number of persons who have successfully used wellbutrin who have a history of an ED--I am not at all sure about the impact (physically and psychologically)on apapetitie suppression and stimulating an ED--Did you discuss this with your physician and are they aware of your history fca

I'm taking Wellbutrin, have been for nearly two years now, and can't say that it's decreased my appetite so far...

It hasn't actually caused weight gain, that I can tell -- it's only one of several drugs I've been on in the past two years -- but it hasn't caused weight loss, either.

As always, your mileage may vary. What's true for me, won't necessarily apply to you.

Good luck, though. I'm pretty happy with WB, over all, because it has the most favorable side effect profile of anything I've been on. On the other hand, I can't say it's all that effective against my depression...

I could be wrong, if the regulations have changed, but as of four or five years ago, it was legal to have a physician write a prescription for medications not permitted in the US, to be filled by a pharmcy in another country.

The limitation is that you can import medications that are not approved for the US, if you're doing so in small amounts for personal use.

I know there are some changes because of people getting drugs from Canada, but those were drugs also currently available in the US.

If your Pdoc thinks Edronax would be good for you, s/he might be willing and able to write a prescription you could fill in Britain or Europe, for example. Also, Cymbalta is another SNRI, which is available in the US, which some people have found useful.

Hello!

I was wondering how you found reboxetine helpful? I tried it, it seemed great for panic, but not helpful for general mood. Also I got acne, my periods stopped and I lost weight and became grumpy (according to my friends).

Anyway I've also tried wellbutrin, and well for me, it was quite weird (and I can see why its used for people to give up smoking) because I had complete control over my eating binges and things. It like, removes your desire to eat things you know you shouldn't, but which you do anyway because you're hungry/bored/its there etc. So perhaps thats another reason why its not good for people with ED.

Kind regards

Meri

Maybe it did for you! Not for me, though. I have exactly as much control over what I eat as I had before: very little. Obviously, I started on WB before starting treatment for AN, so how much is still ED treatment reaction, and how much is just me? Dunno...

I only know that most days I go to bed kicking myself for eating so much...

Whoops! I guess I should emphasize that the WB is *not* making me binge or anything like that. It's just not having any effect I am aware of over my appetite.
