My BMI number is 23

Posted by Deneb on April 29, 2006, at 18:58:01

My BMI number is 23 and I'm going to learn to be okay with it. I'm going to try my best to eat fewer calories (around 1200) and exercise everyday. Hopefully I'll start to lose some weight. I'm going to try really hard to not worry about how fat I look.

According to my doctor, I'm healthy and only a little overweight. I'm going to try really hard to like me the way I am.

I'm going to try my hardest not to binge and purge. I'm not going to freak out if I eat some cake and chips.

I'm recording everything I eat and counting calories. I hope this works for me. I'm hoping to lose 15 pounds over a year.

Is there anyone here with eating disordered behaviours who was able to lose extra weight in a healthy way?

What helped you?

Racer is right, you are a normal weight. Do not start dieting!!!!!!! Dieting ruins your metabolism and makes you fat. From about age 13 to age 19, I was constantly dieting, though my BMI would have been in the normal range. Then something shifted in my metabolism and I gained a lot of weight. I am in my 50's now, and I often wonder if I had never started the diet yo-yo, would I be as fat as I am. Cecilia

I know I'm technically at a normal weight, but I really do have a lot of fat. Plus, Asians are overweight if they have a BMI of over 23. I'm just on the cusp of being overweight.

It won't be a diet, it'll be a permanent change in eating.

I'm worried about the yo-yo dieting too. I'm going to try to exercise more to increase my metabolism.

If technically you are at a healthy weight, but you're still not happy with your figure, it seems that exercise is what you need, rather than a diet. It could be that all you need is a little healthy muscle tone to change your figure into something that you're happy with. I suggest this because everyone needs exercise - even people that are in "perfect shape". There's no need to overdo it though - that could be counterproductive.
