Think your pdoc might be a little strange?

Posted by Racer on July 26, 2005, at 23:31:58

I just finished "Running With Scissors" today. OK, I'll admit it, I just started it today, too... NOT one of my better days...

Anyway, it's a memoir by a fellow whose mother basically gave him to her psychiatrist when he was 12. The pdoc's whole family was pretty well whacked, with him as the Head Whacko. The story is really appalling, but it's a little like a train wreck, where you keep reading partly because you can't believe that any of this really happened, and partly because you keep hoping something will suddenly change -- "Just kidding, everyone!"

I'm not at all sure whether I recommend this book. Some of it is so horrifying that I'm not sure I like having those images in my mind. On the other hand, it does show a certain resilience inherent in the human race.

{shrug} But if you've ever shrugged off that sense that your psychiatrist is just a little ... odd...

I read this last year on the reccomendation of someone here..

On one level it is amusing..

but then you realise its a true story, and its simply quite disturbing..

One of the MH nurses I work with here is reading it at the moment and it will be interesting to hear her views on it..

I found Scissors to be a really disturbing book, too. His next one, "Dry" was pretty triggering for me, but wouldn't be for youse guys. His sense of humour is great, though.
I actually passed both books out of my collection to new homes!

I donated my copy of running with scissors to our "office library"..

Will be interesting to see what the "psych professionals" I work with think of it.. hmmmm

I haven't read that one yet, but I read "Dry" and "Magical Thinking" both by the same author, Augusten Burroughs. He has such a dark sense of humor. He is incredibly interesting and candid and often oddly flippant about some horrendous experiences. He sometimes speaks briefly about the info he gives in "Running with Scissors" in the other two books, and that was pretty disturbing. I don't know if I can stomach reading "Running with Scissors". Let us know how it goes, OK?
I'm very glad at this moment that my pdoc is kind of stiff. :)
