I just finished "Running With Scissors" today. OK, I'll admit it, I just started it today, too... NOT one of my better days...
Anyway, it's a memoir by a fellow whose mother basically gave him to her psychiatrist when he was 12. The pdoc's whole family was pretty well whacked, with him as the Head Whacko. The story is really appalling, but it's a little like a train wreck, where you keep reading partly because you can't believe that any of this really happened, and partly because you keep hoping something will suddenly change -- "Just kidding, everyone!"
I'm not at all sure whether I recommend this book. Some of it is so horrifying that I'm not sure I like having those images in my mind. On the other hand, it does show a certain resilience inherent in the human race.
{shrug} But if you've ever shrugged off that sense that your psychiatrist is just a little ... odd...
