I was thinking about how important books are to me and how they are everywhere in my house, taking up space. I use the library but I'd rather own books. My kids are just like me. Going to a bookstore is like dropping into a candy shop for them. Maybe I need my escape portals handy at all times, I'm not sure.
So the question: Do you own or borrow (my youngest says "rent") books? And why one or the other?

When I am very hard up, I will borrow a book.. but as a rule, I like owning them SO much, I will spend the last money on a book *l*
We've just had to put 1000 of ours into storage - we live in a rather small flat, and as we're trying to get it ready to sell, we've hired a storage unit and put loads of stuff into it.. but I'm finding myself really missing those books that are in there!!
When we move, we really want to have a place with a room we can turn into a library (and toy room for my husbands HUGE star wars collection *L*).. thats my dream!!

mostly depend on 3 things:
the budget
the shelf space
my husband's good humorthe last one's not usually a big deal unless the other two are. my hubby likes books alot and that's partly why we love each other. that and maps.
anyway, how badly i want the book has no bearing, because whenever i want a book, i want it badly.
then, every few years, when my shelves are bursting, i go through the books and find some to trade back to my local bookseller for store credit. (or i might give all or some to a charitable org.) i keep ones that i feel i'll want to read again, or that are a good reference, or that are particularly high-quality editions.

I will on the rare occasion borrow a book from the library - generally to get a feel for what the author is like.
But I much prefer to buy. I'm the sort of person who will read a good book over and over. So it makes sense to keep known good books at home.
But it does get expensive, so I'll usually try to get my fiction from second hand bookstores. And I make sure I always trade in bought books that aren't good keepers. I find that I generally have to buy my psych books new.
The other thing with owning vs borrowing is that if you are reading a series, sometimes you can't borrow it in order. And I hate reading books out of order.
And going to the bookstore isn't like a candy store for me. It's more like a safe place for me. Probably 'cause I spent half my school life hidden away in the school library.

Hmm. Both. I usually borrow first and then if it is something I think I would like to read again and again or something that I would like to refer back to then I will buy it.
I did a cull on my books last year :-(
It was a very sad time for me.
But I was thinking that I hope to be moving overseas in the near future and didn't want them to rot in storage and so better to give them to a good home. Most of them were books I got when I studied English Lit. Or novels.
Most of the books I have now are reference books...
Specialist Dictionaries (though ya don't really need those anymore with internet access)
DSM
Textbooks
Stuff like that...
I won't buy novels anymore unless I really really like it.
I have a few pop science books that I could probably have done without.
Just trying not to accumulate too much stuff...

I registered, but I've never had the courage to do it. (Weird, because I'll give them to charitable orgs and stuff.)

I buy them all. It's expensive, but I'd rather spend money on books than food :) My library is so personal to me, I think books tell so much about a person. I would be incredibly heart-broken if I had to give them up ...
