Since I lost my appreciation for music in my postpartum depression, and have never regained it, and since I'm thoroughly sick of talk radio, I've joined an audiobook club and am also downloading from Audible.com.
Of course, I love to read as well, and mostly read nonfiction in actual books. But I spend long stretches in the car. And car listening is best with things you can easily turn off and on, basically pick up the thread, etc.
I've pretty much exhausted my usual favorites. I like not very deep mysteries. Especially the oldies. Ellery Queen, Nero Wolfe, Agatha Christie, Jonathan Kellerman.
If anything gets too deep or too emotional, I tend to turn off just as I do with music. I think I'm more looking for clever.
Unfortunately the audiobook selection is not as wide as I might wish, and is mostly limited to classics and best sellers.
I've given some thought to relistening to some of my childhood favorites, or giving a new chance for some of my childhood less than favorites. And I could listen to Jane Austen forever.
When my son's in the car we listen to Harry Potter or a Series of Unfortunate Events, which I thoroughly enjoy. But we're almost finished everything available with those too, and have to look for some other children's books as well.
Any light ideas?

Dinah,
just near my office is a "talking book shop" and I was actually really suprised at the wide number of books available.. I don't think, of the books I have read this year, that any *weren't* available as audio books!!
I have the Jasper Fforde Thursday Next series on CD - "the Eyre affair" is the first, and hilaroiusly brilliant.. And Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy radio series which is even more hilarious..
I think your son would probably enjoy the "Artemis Fowl" series on audio book - I *love* them *G* And they're perfect for his age group - and about a naughty but genius boy and faires and goblins and the like.. *G*

Thanks Nikki! I'll look into those. :)
That does sound like something my son would like. We need something to get him through those long days until summer when Harry Potter 6 is released.

I have HP 6 on preorder at my local book store to be picked up ar 00:01 on the day of release *L* Yes, I am that sad!!
There are 5 in the Artemis Fowl series so far.. and they are huge huge fun *g* Who could want more out of a book that an evil child genius, faries and leprachauns and some suspense!! I'm pretty easy to please me!!
As for you without kidlet, the "No 1 Ladies detective Agency" series that Racer has also reccomended, and others, is great.. Its really easy going, very sweet, and all round nice.
What about Radio Shows? I know that over here you can buy recordings of old shows.. many from the 50's and 60's especially at the moment.. Comedies and panel shows and the like.. Or radio plays even..
Just throwing ideas out there!

I've heard the first book in that series, and would definitely consider renting more.
I have my Book 6 on pre-order from Amazon. And as usual, I'll turn to the last chapter when I get it. I hate suspense, so in some ways I wish I had come across Harry in a few years. :)

I haven't got it yet, but I read a review years ago of "Bridge of San Luis Rey (audio)" read by Sam Waterston. I want it.
If you get it, let us know if it's as great as the review said -- they said that his voice was perfect for the book, which is why the book review section reviewed a book on tape.
Just throwing it in there...

I'll look for it. I remember reading it years ago and enjoying it.
