Anyone read Lemony Snicket?

Posted by Racer on November 12, 2004, at 11:55:34

I just saw some books in the ChainBookStore the other day, and thought they might be fun, but wanted some trusted recommendations before I took the time.

So, anyone?

UM.. OK.. Is it a little obvious for me to reply to this??!! *l*

I liked them.. But I, personally, would reccomend the "Artemis Fowl" books over "Lemony Snickett"..

I think Lemony Snickett film is coming out fairly soon too.. they're very visual books.. great escapism!!!

*grinning* Kids books.. my speciality!!

Based solely on your recommendation -- and I was hoping you'd respond ;-D -- I will go out tomorrow and track down the Artemis Fowl...

Thanks, darling!

Artemis Fowl is.. well.. fairies, an evil boy genius, and a wonderful wonderful dwarf.. I can't remember which the first book in the series is - just Artemis Fowl I htink (though we all know book titles are often different in US than here in UK *l*).. but you do need to start from the first one!! *g*

"Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell" brilliant.. but HUGE and takes alot more brainpower.. but do save that for when you can read well again.. I've only 75 pages left *sighs* but I will be glad not to have to carry that brick around *lol*

Do you find yourself dreading finishing some books, because it means that you have to leave the characters? Like with "His Dark Materials", I was anxious to find out what happened, but also not wanting to finish and have to say goodbye to them. Same with Thursday Next -- "OK, now that I've gotten to know you, I want to know what happens NEXT!"

Then there are the books I really don't want to finish, like "House of Mirth" where I didn't want to finish it because I knew that Lily would die. I didn't want her to die, I wanted to save her, to allow her that happiness I thought she had earned. {{sigh}} (And Gillian Anderson was surprisingly good in that movie, and Dan Ackroyd was BRILLIANT casting...)

Got a suggestion for a thin book of silly essays for you: "Pure Drivel" by Steve Martin. His writing is better than many of his movies. 'Specially loved the one called "Michael Jackson's Old Face" -- thought it was way too silly until the end, when I realized it was brilliant.

Yes, I am the same.. I have been known to cry over the fact I've finished a book.. His Dark materials was on..

But.. at the Pullman signing.. he said that "the Book of Dust" (can't double quote as its not written yet!), which its been known for a while will be the 4th His Dark Materials book.. WILL be a sequel, and not the rumoured prequel.. It will be Lyra at 16 and tell a very important part of her life!! *grins* No mention of whether Will will be in it, but we can hope!! *g*

And ofcourse, my trilogy is now signed!! *grins* And I bought a new copy of Northern Lights (Golden Compass to you guys) as my copy is rather battered *l* So thats signed too!

Just been to the book store actually.. and they're doing a scheme where you pick a kids name off the tree (has their age on it too.. they're kids in our local hospital), and buy a book for them and they'll wrap it and give it to the kids.. I bought "Sabriel" for Margaret age 13!!! A great idea I thought.

Will look that Steve Martin book up!! I'm not a huge fan of his - though a friend used to date him *l*

I was never a fan of SM, either, but reading some of his writing changed that. Too bad he can't get that same je ne sais quoi (sp?) in his movies, but he hasn't that I've seen. I hope you like it. Some if literally laugh out loud while alone in the room funny. At least, I was giggling maniacally and sometimes laughing outright while reading it. Scared the cats, and my husband had to come check on me.

Apparently he doesn't have it in real life either *giggles*

OK, that's absolutely IT for us, Nikki...

You know what that means, don't you???

One way or another, I'm gonna have to get myself to London so we can whisper and giggle for hours! Damn, it's gonna be expensive...

Oh, well, your guys publish better books over there anyway. Gonna have to take an empty suitcase, though, to get them home.

And I understand your publishing world is greatly improved since Martin Amis hopped to this side of the pond...

*laughing*

My top tip (from trips to America *l*).. have one suitcase that is slightly smaller than the other, so you pack in the smaller one, and then pack that in the other suitcase *lol*

We do seem to have some awesome authors around at the moment.. And I *love* your Amis comment *laughing*

I plan on winning the lottery next week.. so will send the tickets on over *laughing*
