Do you find yourself dreading finishing some books, because it means that you have to leave the characters? Like with "His Dark Materials", I was anxious to find out what happened, but also not wanting to finish and have to say goodbye to them. Same with Thursday Next -- "OK, now that I've gotten to know you, I want to know what happens NEXT!"
Then there are the books I really don't want to finish, like "House of Mirth" where I didn't want to finish it because I knew that Lily would die. I didn't want her to die, I wanted to save her, to allow her that happiness I thought she had earned. {{sigh}} (And Gillian Anderson was surprisingly good in that movie, and Dan Ackroyd was BRILLIANT casting...)
Got a suggestion for a thin book of silly essays for you: "Pure Drivel" by Steve Martin. His writing is better than many of his movies. 'Specially loved the one called "Michael Jackson's Old Face" -- thought it was way too silly until the end, when I realized it was brilliant.
